Humanity & Inclusion is an independent and impartial aid organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. We work alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

Outraged by the injustice faced by people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, we aspire to a world of solidarity and inclusion, enriched by our differences, where everyone can live in dignity.

Describe an investment in leadership

Humanity & Inclusion staff and leadership participate in regular trainings and development courses. These include a mix of internal courses, such as the series Management 2.0, available to managers across the Network. In addition, the HI Welcome series is completed by all new staff and sets out the organization's values, history and strategy. An example of an annual course that is also mandatory would be the course, "Fight Against Fraud and Corruption." Other internal courses cover key topics in emergency action, rehabilitation, and advocacy, among others. Externally, staff are encouraged to grow professionally by attending briefings, trainings and courses. These could be anything from briefings on humanitarian law, to functional trainings on topics such as cybersecurity or Facebook advertising, to broader courses on crisis management and leadership.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Humanity & Inclusion participates in hundreds of local, national & international networks. Leadership regularly works to improve U.S. policy as it relates to the rights of persons with disabilities. HI US is the current Chair of the Steering Committee of the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines. On digital, Americans are mobilized to sign petitions urging the U.S. to ban landmines. Technical Advisors participate in groups such as CORE Group, SEEP Network, and the Global Campaign for Education. The U.S. Executive Director participates actively in InterAction & as HI's representative to the Hilton Laureates. Civil Society Advocates attend meetings like the First Committee at the United Nations, to the Disability Summit happening in November 2021 (Norway), to the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD, Mine Ban Treaty, & Convention on Cluster Munitions. Inclusive Governance staff work with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities to ensure that their voices are represented at key meetings.

We faced the organization’s largest ever emergency: the Covid-19 pandemic. We are grateful that our dedicated team members, working closely with the communities we serve, could safely launch or adapt more than 170 projects in 59 countries to help people with disabilities, people living in conflict, and others to cope, heal, and navigate the added stress of the pandemic. Those fast-acting, far-reaching programs helped more than 2.2 million people keep the coronavirus at bay, and safely continue receiving assistance. The organization's "B-SAFE: Basic Services Access For Everyone" mobilized teams to 1 / support the health response, 2/ mitigate the impact of the pandemic, & 3/ improve inclusive access to essential services. HI provided testimony and helped analyze the impact of the pandemic. While the pandemic demanded operational flexibility unlike any time in our 39-years, 2020 was also an impressive year. Strong relationships with the people we serve, with a range of donors and partner organizations to bolster shared goals, helped Humanity & Inclusion deliver direct aid to 3.9 million people. The explosions in Beirut, a series of typhoons in the Philippines, ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Syria, and chronic crises in countries such as Burkina Faso, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali kept staff extremely busy. Humanity & Inclusion revived its advocacy for the U.S. to join the Mine Ban Treaty, and worked to influence the drafting of an international political declaration to end human suffering caused by the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. A commitment to greater efficiency, and to strengthen our support to partners kept Humanity & Inclusion true to our mandate, building capacity every step of the way, especially at the local level. We did this with oversight and adherence to policies that protect the communities we serve and staff. In 2020, we created Risk & Audit and Transformation divisions to improve accountability.
