This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Safe Haven for Cats reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Staffing
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
As a result of the veterinary shortage, we had to employ independent contractors in these positions and they were much more costly.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
There is a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and COVID made this worse. This caused us to have a program that we could not fully operate for nine months in 2020 until the position could be filled.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Many volunteers in 2020 and somewhat in 2021 were reluctant to come and volunteer at our shelter as they did previously. This resulted in somewhat curtailed adoption hours (eliminated two evenings).
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We instituted appointments for prospective adopters to come to our shelter. This worked out very well and we have kept that system although we are also back to walk-ins also.

The nonprofit provides evidence of investment in leadership development
One of the best activities we supported this year for our management team was the attendance at the Best Friends Animal Society Annual Converence in Raleigh, NC, where we are located. Eleven of our staff spent 5 days together at the conference. In addition to being a great team building experience, we attended sessions by top experts in our field on adoptions, shelter management, spay/neuter clinics, community cat management, medical care, staffing, marketing, and the future of animal welfare.
The nonprofit provides evidence of leadership through focusing externally and mobilizing resources for the mission.
Strategic Partnerships
Raising Awareness
We have many partnerships in place at SAFE Haven for Cats. In our SAFE Care Spay/Neuter Clinic we partner with 13 local municipal shelters and rescue groups to provide s/n services to their dogs and cats. In our adoption program we partner with five municipal shelters who have the most need, taking cats and kittens from their overcrowded shelters to ours, eliminating the euthanasia of those animals. We partner with the only cat cafe in our area and provide all the adoptable cats to them. We have actively and strategically planned our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok social media posts and activities resulting in an increase of brand awareness and loyalty.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The greatest change we have seen is in the number of people who have contacted us about having to give up their personal pets. This is at an all time high. As a result of this tremendous need we have streamlined our adoption process to make it much easier for new families to adopt. Thus making more room for intake. We increased our adoptions by 300 over 2020. We are service thirty-one counties in North Carolina through our SAFE Care low-cost spay/neuter clinic. In response to demand, we doubled the size of our faclility and increased our capacity from 3,200 to 6,700 surgeries per year. Thirty percent of the people coming to our clinic receive these services for free.
