How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Due to the impact of COVID-19, Central SC Habitat for Humanity was unable to host its annual "More than a Home" Gala. This event typically is the organization's largest fundraiser. This resulted in a loss of approximately $180,000 - $200,000 in operational and programmatic funding. This has forced Central SC Habitat to employ alternative fundraising strategies, including its first ever GoFundMe campaign entitled "Home for the Holidays." Although the organization finished the fiscal year strong, as recovery continues, it is anticipated that fundraising should continue to rise in the upcoming year.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Initially, construction projects were halted due to quarantine and social distancing requirements, as well as the loss of community volunteers who are critical to the organization's operations. However, Central SC Habitat developed COVID safe procedures that allowed 5 houses to be completed during the pandemic. The effects of COVID made the organization more committed to ensuring that the community continues to be served, even in the most dire of consequences.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Not only did Central SC Habitat for Humanity to continue to build and repair homes during COVID-19, but it also developed a long-term relationship with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, serving as a community distribution point for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to include gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, and face shields. Over the period, Central SC Habitat for Humanity distributed over 250,000 pieces of PPE, worth an estimated $750,000 to local non-profit organizations, schools and daycares, churches, and other community groups.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Central SC Habitat will continue to value the use of both hybrid and on-line options for both day-to-day operations, as well as its fundraising events. It also continues a strong working relationship with SC Emergency Management Division on disaster services.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


As stated previously, as part of Central SC Habitat for Humanity's COVID-19 response, the organization served as a PPE warehouse and distribution center for the duration of the pandemic. It continues to served other non-profits in need of hand sanitizer, masks, and other supplies, but may not have the resources to procure them.
