The Dictionary Project

Mission

The mission of The Dictionary Project is to ensure that everyone will be able to enjoy the benefits of owning a dictionary. The Dictionary Project works to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade. Since our founding in 1995, over 36 million children have received dictionaries because thousands of people saw the same need in communities all over the United States.

Vision

Our vision for the Dictionary Project is to see this program perpetuated by the children who received dictionaries from our sponsors. This idea will expand the vision of the people who implemented their own Dictionary Projects to generate goodwill through kindness and improving education. We would like to see this project include every child and every language in the world, to help us make the best possible use of our resources on this planet to empower them to take better care of it, so that we can improve the quality of life for everyone. Reading makes a country great! Greatness is generated by compassion and love for mankind. Reading and writing make us see that our lives have more in common than we think by making the reader feel empathy for other people.
