How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Water Mission was in a healthy financial position entering 2020. When pandemic-related shutdowns began in the U.S., we immediately implemented measures to reduce expenses. Water Mission initially applied for a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan but saw income quickly increase in the following weeks. We decided to return the PPP funds to allow organizations facing greater difficulty to weather the pandemic. We ended our 2020 fiscal year on a strong note. However, as we entered 2021, we saw an impact on our revenue and balance sheet. We experienced a decrease in revenue from certain initiatives throughout the year (i.e., special events), where COVID-19 had a negative impact on our restricted and unrestricted cash balances. Most of our work happens in developing countries where changing travel restrictions delayed progress on new safe water projects. We could not use restricted funds as initially planned. These delays resulted in increased use of unrestricted funds.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
While continuing to implement safe water projects, we initiated a global disaster response to COVID-19. This effort included installing more than 8,550 handwashing stations and preventative WASH training with safety procedures and policies to keep staff and the communities we serve safe. Water Mission's safe water projects save lives every day. More than 300 global field staff continued providing uninterrupted, essential, safe water service operations for refugees and vulnerable communities throughout the pandemic. However, our international field staff faced many obstacles, including temporary shutdowns due to travel restrictions and supply disruptions. Despite these obstacles, our team was resilient, allowing us to serve nearly 1.6 million people worldwide with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
All U.S. staff transitioned to remote work in mid-March 2020. We briefly slowed our hiring pace as we assessed any potential impact on our operations while filling critical positions. Initially, we experienced increased COVID-19 designated income funding our ability to respond globally to COVID-19. These restricted funds positively affected our finances and created new growth opportunities. However, pandemic-related restrictions did have an impact on our ability to work on safe water and WASH projects due to increased challenges carrying into 2021. As we entered the 2021 fiscal year, the after-effects of COVID-19 were realized, resulting in decreased revenue and a change on our balance sheets. Even in 2021, the world continues to struggle with ongoing challenges related to COVID-19. While we continue to respond, there is no longer substantial designated income coming in to support our COVID-19 related activities.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
Our experiences during the pandemic confirmed the ability for select positions to work remotely. Allowing for remote-based work enabled us to tap into a larger pool of candidates for U.S.-based recruitment. We now offer more diverse work options for our U.S. employees with remote, office, and flexible roles. Remote work arrangements also created efficiencies, including less travel for staff and implementing enterprise use of Microsoft Teams. The world continues to adjust to an increasing acceptance of virtual work, events, and connections. Our organization has embraced the changes with this shift, including the use of virtual opportunities to connect with our global partners.

We employ a formal leadership development program, Lead Like Jesus, which encourages all staff to live out our values through servant leadership. The program features ongoing training and biweekly dedicated time for staff fellowship. We have also invested in building Water Mission University, our online training program. In the coming year, we are initiating a global leadership development training for our staff in partnership with LifeShape called "The Leader's Journey." We invested in two new management positions to help guide, implement, and sustain this training with our global staff. Our team will begin the program with the first training module, called “Lead Self,” which introduces the foundations for being a great leader.

Our ongoing advocacy efforts are focused on educating advocates; maximizing our impact; and attracting new corporate, institutional, and individual partners. We achieve this through a comprehensive advocacy effort that includes marketing, public relations, and communications. Our external mobilization efforts include global media relations; expanding our online communities through social media; and cultivating deeper relationships with our constituents by sharing inspiring stories of impact. We also host in-person and virtual events, and support volunteer-driven Walk for Water events around the world. Our team regularly participates as thought leaders sharing technical knowledge and expertise in networks and conferences. We also pursue strategic partnerships to expand the impact of our safe water work in community development and disaster response. This comprehensive approach engages, informs, and invites audiences to join us in the collective effort to end the global water crisis.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
For fiscal year 2020, we set an ambitious goal: to serve more than 800,000 people with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions. It was our highest target to date. Amid an unusually difficult year, we exceeded this vision serving more than 1.6 million people around the world. We responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing safe water, handwashing stations, and hygiene education to vulnerable communities. While these initiatives were Water Mission's priority, we also continued to support efforts associated with engineering innovation, disaster response, and community development. Water Mission celebrated several milestones during fiscal year 2020. In Honduras, we installed the 1,000th latrine associated with the Safe Water Western Honduras initiative. In Uganda, we ensured reliable access to safe water was made available to over 460,000 refugees—an increase of more than 40% from 2019. Our groundbreaking technical guide for the design and installation of solar-powered water systems, written in partnership with UNICEF, was translated to allow for greater accessibility. And although our Walk for Water events were held virtually, people joined us from 35 countries—more than ever before. We also launched the Global Water Center, a new nonprofit in the WASH sector focused on eradicating the global water crisis by driving collaboration around standards, accountability, and transparency. The Global Water Center has started the process of convening safe water organizations, corporate partners, and governmental agencies to work together to accelerate an end to the global water crisis. The immediate focus is establishing standards and developing an industry-wide remote monitoring platform to facilitate transparency and outcome-based accountability. Amid all this exciting activity, we remain focused on our vision: that all people have safe water and an opportunity to experience God's love. We will continue building on this work until our vision is a reality.
