At Water Mission, our values of love, excellence, and integrity guide our strategy, culture, and daily decisions as we pursue our mission and vision. Each year, we dedicate time and resources to building upon our culture of servant leadership. We employ a formal leadership development program, Lead Like Jesus, which encourages all staff to live out our values through servant leadership. The program features ongoing training and biweekly dedicated time for staff fellowship. We have also invested in building Water Mission University, our online training program.
In the coming year, we are initiating a global leadership development training for our staff in partnership with LifeShape called "The Leader's Journey." We invested in two new management positions to help guide, implement, and sustain this training with our global staff. Our team will begin the program with the first training module, called “Lead Self,” which introduces the foundations for being a great leader.

Our external mobilization efforts include global media relations; expanding our online communities through social media; and cultivating deeper relationships with our constituents by sharing inspiring stories of impact. We also host in-person and virtual events, and support volunteer-driven Walk for Water events around the world. Our team regularly participates as thought leaders sharing technical knowledge and expertise in networks and conferences. We also pursue strategic partnerships to expand the impact of our safe water work in community development and disaster response. The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
For fiscal year 2020, we set an ambitious goal: to serve more than 800,000 people with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions. It was our highest target to date. Amid an unusually difficult year, we exceeded this vision serving more than 1.6 million people around the world. We responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing safe water, handwashing stations, and hygiene education to vulnerable communities. While these initiatives were Water Mission's priority, we also continued to support efforts associated with engineering innovation, disaster response, and community development.
Water Mission celebrated several milestones during fiscal year 2020. In Honduras, we installed the 1,000th latrine associated with the Safe Water Western Honduras initiative. In Uganda, we ensured reliable access to safe water was made available to over 460,000 refugees—an increase of more than 40% from 2019. Our groundbreaking technical guide for the design and installation of solar-powered water systems, written in partnership with UNICEF, was translated to allow for greater accessibility. And although our Walk for Water events were held virtually, people joined us from 35 countries—more than ever before.
We also launched the Global Water Center, a new nonprofit in the WASH sector focused on eradicating the global water crisis by driving collaboration around standards, accountability, and transparency. The Global Water Center has started the process of convening safe water organizations, corporate partners, and governmental agencies to work together to accelerate an end to the global water crisis. The immediate focus is establishing standards and developing an industry-wide remote monitoring platform to facilitate transparency and outcome-based accountability.
Amid all this exciting activity, we remain focused on our vision: that all people have safe water and an opportunity to experience God's love. We will continue building on this work until our vision is a reality.
