How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

HRM’s net assets increased by 32% from 2020 to 2021 due to the generosity of the community. All contributions came from individual donors, churches, businesses, and foundations. HRM received no government funding or loans. HRM did not terminate any employee due to lack of payroll funds.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

During heightened periods of COVID infections in Henderson County and during two major outbreaks of COVID within HRM's shelter, HRM did not accept new overnight guests into the emergency shelter. The Day Center program at HRM's Outreach Center was closed for most of 2020 and reopened in late April 2021. HRM's emergency shelter, feeding program, and Good Samaritan’s Clinic continued to operate with certain limitations during COVID; HRM adjusted to the governor’s orders and guidelines as they have changed.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

During the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and 2021, HRM programming has been adjusted to safely provide essential services to those in need. For example, emergency shelter hours were expanded from overnight to 24 hours to enable social distancing and offer shelter during cold weather months. Blue Ridge Health, which operates HRM’s Good Samaritan Medical Clinic, has provided hundreds of onsite COVID-19 tests and numerous COVID-19 vaccine clinics. HRM offered curbside to-go meals for the public and reserved dining hall seating, with social distancing, for shelter residents. Mask use has been mandatory, following the governor’s orders and guidelines. HRM will continue serving those in need and will adapt the provision of essential services, as necessary, so they are delivered in the safest possible manner.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

HRM’s shelter intake process has been transformed. During COVID, prospective shelter guests had to have a negative COVID test as part of the shelter intake process. Usually, these guests would take a COVID test at HRM’s Good Samaritan Clinic, which is operated by Blue Ridge Health. HRM has expanded this partnership with Blue Ridge Health by designing a more comprehensive shelter intake portal process which incorporates mental and behavioral health assessments along with the basic medical health assessment before individuals check into HRM’s emergency shelter. Since many of HRM’s population experiences mental illnesses and addictions, the goal is to help connect individuals to a professional, quality healthcare network and support these individuals on their path to healing and recovery.

The mission of Hendersonville Rescue Mission (HRM) is to minister to needy persons by way of presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ to them and helping to provide for their spiritual and physical needs. HRM serves the most vulnerable in our community - everyone in need regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, or disability. HRM's primary service population is homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families.

Leadership development investments include Citygate executive leadership conferences for Rev. Anthony S. McMinn, who serves as HRM's President and CEO. Rev. McMinn was ordained into ministry in 2002 and has led the organization for 29 years. Citygate Network is an organization that provides training, resources, and support to about 300 member agencies serving those dealing with hunger, homelessness, abuse, and addiction. Recently, Rev. McMinn accepted an appointment to become a Board Member at Citygate Network.

A workforce development partner includes Goodwill Career Connections. In 2003, HRM was certified by the Citygate Network, a network that provides training, resources, and support to about 300 member agencies serving those dealing with hunger, homelessness, abuse, and addiction. Since its certification, HRM has mentored other rescue missions as they became established in Western NC. HRM raises awareness of its mission and cause through broadcast media, print media, and digital and social media platforms.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
