Habitat leadership believes that leadership development is crucial to the ongoing success of our organization in fulfilling its mission. Employees with certifications in their respective disciplines (e.g. CPA, JD, CAPM, Grants Professional) are encouraged to maintain it at agency expense. Additionally, Habitat’s 12 Department Heads are included annually in Belmont University’s Executive Learning Network. Through Belmont’s generosity, at no cost to Habitat beyond the time investment of participants, Department Heads are invited to attend scheduled leadership development training sessions with the associated networking opportunities among participants. World class experts cover topics ranging from “Reshaping Business & Supply Chain Strategy Beyond COVID-19” to “Leading Creativity with an Entrepreneurial Mindset.” Habitat is truly appreciative of this opportunity to include its Department Heads in world-class leadership development.

One of Habitat’s five goals relates to partnerships and collaborations, which at its core is about our external mobilization efforts. Habitat believes that advocacy for affordable housing is amplified when we unite with others focused on similar issues. Senior staff members serve in leadership roles with various affordable housing organizations in our community, including the Affordable Housing Coalition, the Habitat TN State Board of Directors, and the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) Housing Educators Task Force, along with numerous civic clubs across our service area. Our Director of Research and Grants was an invited panelist at the 2022 Habitat International Conference in Atlanta. Habitat representatives participate in the annual Tennessee Housing Conference and the Habitat TN State Conference, each attended by representatives of all major affordable housing providers in our state. Habitat’s social media sites are linked to those of our partners to expand outreach.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
With respect to fundraising, a major pandemic-related shift was essential to retain Habitat’s flow of undesignated contributed income, especially the significant portion historically generated through indoor special events which were cancelled for 13 months. For one October 2020 event, the solution was to turn the indoor seated dinner into a drive-in event. Live entertainment welcomed guests, boxed meals replaced plated dinners, and car radios provided the sound. The event was live-streamed on Habitat’s social media channels for those who could not attend, and our text-to-give fundraising platform was integrated into the program to make the donation process touch-free. For another event in November 2020, Habitat substituted a “Gingerbread House Appeal” for the planned indoor luncheon. Instead of inviting 10 guests to a seated luncheon, event sponsors provided Habitat the names of 10 recipients to whom a gingerbread house kit should be delivered during Thanksgiving week. The kits were “Habitat branded,” with the frosting, gumdrops and other decorations all in Habitat colors. The new concept was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, evidenced by social media posts of recipients’ families assembling the houses, word of companies establishing competitive challenges among recipient clients, and calls from those who had never sponsored a luncheon table inquiring about how they could participate in the Appeal.
