The United Way has been serving the Charlotte County community since 1966. For all these years, the generosity of donors has made possible programs that nurture children, help youth succeed, promote health and wellness, strengthen adults and families, and provide basic assistance to Charlotte County neighbors. The United Way draws on the resources of the entire community, both human and financial, to support programs in our area. Each of our member agencies relies on volunteers to help provide these critically needed services.

United Way of Charlotte County is a 501(c)(3) organization, with an IRS ruling year of 1977, and donations are tax-deductible.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Our campaign is extremely reliant on employee campaign giving, which also primarily comes in as pledges, paid out in the upcoming year. We will continue to work toward diversifying our funding streams. We were also able to apply for the PPP and stay at full staff.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The COVID-19 pandemic limited our ability to offer in-person programming and volunteer opportunities due to closures, social distancing, and mask mandates.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We were able to mobilize the community to help those in need through mask collections for the schools, basic necessity drives. The staff worked remotely and utilized virtual meeting technology when needed. And we implemented an extremely successful virtual event.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Changes that we made to our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program to ensure client and volunteer safety due to the pandemic will stay in place moving forward.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


United Way's campaigns/budgets are traditionally driven by employee campaigns. Due to the pandemic, our staff were limited in access to employees at our campaign locations. We adapted by creating online tools, video presentations and other virtual options to reach employees around our county and stay engaged with our donors. In addition, our signature event is a wine and tapa's event, Beaujolais. While we were unable to have an in-person event last year, we pivoted, and modified the event to make it virtual. We created a drive thru wine and food pick up and also offered delivery; we had a live Facebook and YouTube presentation by the chef and wine enthusiast, and live music. The event was a great success!
