How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
Due to the lockdown, we had to postpone all admissions to the facility for about 6 months. We also had to cancel our two main fundraisers for the year. We were able to apply and receive the PPP loan to assist with payroll expenses. The Seminole County Cares act was able to provide reimbursement to assist with the cost of PPE and other COVID-19 expenses for the year.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
During the pandemic, residents were encouraged to remain on campus with the exception of medical appointments. We shifted the focus of our recreational activities program to increase the frequency and variety of on-campus activities, and brought in activities and meals that residents were no longer accessing in the community, such as an outdoor movie screen, slushy machine, and catered lunches from a variety of restaurants, ranging from Chick-fil-A to Arthur’s Catering. Group therapy, which has traditionally been facilitated by independent contractors, shifted to being facilitated by staff from the Clinical Department. We were able to expand our telehealth capacity, and began utilizing Zoom, DoxyMe, and other platforms for psychiatry, individual therapy, and many medical appointments. We began working with a new primary care provider who was able to see residents on campus. From March to June 2020, we had to pause admissions due to COVID-19 related concerns.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
Lakewood Center daily operations were adapted to allow for social distancing and increased sanitization. Food service, housekeeping, grounds and maintenance, caregiving and medication operations were dramatically impacted. We put up physical barriers (aka plexiglass) where appropriate, hung signs and used physical reminders for social distancing, began wearing masks (staff and residents), and increased sanitization or common spaces and resident apartments. Many meetings were conducted on Zoom or GoogleMeet rather than in-person. We adapted resident programming as described above. We developed the capacity for on-site COVID testing and procedures for quarantine of residents who were exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, exposed to the virus, or were confirmed to have COVID-19.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
There is a shortage of psychiatrists in the Orlando area. We found that the use of tele-psychiatry led to availability of more qualified psychiatric providers, and will continue to use these providers remotely after the pandemic is behind us. We will continue the option to receive primary care services on-campus, and will continue to implement many infection control protocols after the pandemic to prevent the spread of cold and flu.

At Lakewood Center, our trained 24-hour staff provide a wide range of psychiatric care services along with recreational opportunities, wellness programs, and a Therapeutic Work Program. Our programs vary in the degree of structure and supervision to meet the specific emotional, social, and physical needs of each resident. Our services include group therapy, crisis counseling, medication monitoring, and individualized treatment planning to help our residents manage the symptoms of their mental illnesses so they can enjoy life to the fullest. The primary goal of our voluntary Therapeutic Work Program is to involve our residents in meaningful work on campus, thus improving the quality of their lives. Lakewood also teaches the benefits of volunteerism and offers volunteer opportunities on campus as well as selecting community projects that match their talents and interests.
