Mission

The New York City AIDS Memorial honors the more than 100,000 New Yorkers who have died of AIDS and acknowledges the contributions of caregivers and activists who mobilized to provide care for the ill, fight discrimination, lobby for medical research, and alter the drug approval process. The Memorial aims to inspire visitors to remember and reflect as well as empower current and future activists, health professionals, and people living with HIV in the continuing mission to eradicate the disease through the maintenance of our permanent, architecturally significant Memorial as well as through educational and cultural programming.

Vision

Since its dedication, the Memorial has offered a place of urban respite, allowing visitors across demographics to reflect on the ongoing AIDS crisis. It has also emerged as an exceptionally unique and powerful forum that aims to inspire and empower diverse audiences—including current and future activists, people living with HIV, and creative communities—to continue the mission to end the epidemic while embracing lessons from the past. This is accomplished by maintaining our architecturally significant monument and jewel-box park, bounded by Seventh Avenue, Greenwich Avenue, and West 12th Street in the West Village, and presenting free, public, community-centered, cultural programming, including art installations, dance performances, film screenings, poetry readings, live storytelling events, and other community gatherings, that regularly activate the Memorial site.
