Vision

EJI hopes to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, carceral responses to health problems and horrific conditions of confinement that traumatize hundreds of thousands of incarcerated people. We want to increase protections for the vulnerable and achieve justice for the innocent, people wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced. We want to improve public safety by addressing root causes of conflict and violence. EJI wants to end severe consequences of poverty and inequality by relieving food insecurity, providing access to health care and challenging barriers to opportunity for millions of people unfairly marginalized by low incomes. Finally, EJI wants to confront our history of racial injustice. We seek a world where the children of our children are no longer burdened by presumptions of guilt or dangerousness if they are children of color. We want to acknowledge and document the ways this history creates barriers to equality and to remedy the harms that it has caused.

Goals

1. 1.Promote a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the history of racial injustice and how it undermines fair treatment and equal opportunity for many Americans
2. 2.Expand our Anti-Poverty initiatives, providing services to address urgent needs around healthcare, hunger, and the unjust burden of fines and fees to marginalized communities in Alabama.
3. 3.Advance criminal justice reform through strategic litigation, advocacy, and education efforts
