What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
The organization engages in strategic partnering with other nonprofit, public, and private sector organizations to distribute healthy groceries within the areas of greatest need within South Florida. Examples include Door Dash, YMCA, and local FQHC's. As the only Florida member of the Food Is Medicine Coalition, Poverello collaborates in presenting at national conferences, research and awareness raising activies in Florida and throughout the nation.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
With shutdowns, we immediately upgraded our phone system to convert our in person communication to state of the art communication platform that allows for text, fax and phone to and from the individual staff person's number. Overnight, we became a grocery delivery service with the help of volunteers and Door Dash. With large retailers' food demands trumping ours, we had to diversify our sourcing of good from some of the large suppliers to smaller, more local ones. We provided raises and increased benefits we framed as "hazard" to compensate for their constant support of our mission in the face of the pandemic. The organization began new programming aimed at preventative care including STI testing. This allowed us to become a "covered entity" under HRSA's 340b pharmacy program and ultimately allows our customers to not only pick up their food from us, but also their medicine. This means that our 2000 clients with HIV are now eligible to receive their medication from us as well. Our pharmacy model provides incentives for participants to achieve their health outcomes. So for example, a person with HIV who receives their medications from us and maintains an undetectable viral load, attends their physician appointments and picks up their medications can have rental assistance that equals up to half of the proceeds from the pharmacy program for that patient.
