Due to social distancing and mask requirements, we had to cancel our two signature events to ensure the safety of our participants, resulting in lost net revenues of approximately $450,000.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
In March 2020, due to COVID-19 and mandatory social distancing, the Dan Marino Foundation (DMF) ceased all-in-person interaction with its students. Due to structured and organized curriculum delivery, the Foundation was able to continue providing services to its students virtually through the use of Zoom which provided instructors with the ability to: • Accommodate virtual classrooms of students • Run the classes with no time constraints • Divide students into small groups for more-specific instruction • Allowed for one-on-one time as needed In addition to Zoom, the employment preparation segment the program was supported by the Foundation’s internal software, VI|ready, providing the students with the ability to improve interview skills virtually in an organized fashion with unlimited practices using avatars. Students also recorded interviews which were then evaluated by the instructor.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
In succeeding months, the Foundation pivoted to a hybrid model with smaller classroom settings combined with continued virtual learning. Masks, temperature checks and social distancing were all in place while students were on campus or on select internship sites. Labs were constructed at the Campus allowing for hands-on experiences in the hospitality field. The Marino Student Café was instrumental in providing opportunities for instruction in the culinary and hospitality fields while maintaining a safe environment.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
While students have returned to in-person classes this fall, we also provide a virtual option for those who are not yet comfortable returning to the classroom. The students and staff undergo weekly Covid testing, and a mask requirement is in place throughout the building. These procedures will be implemented as long as needed in order to protect the health of students and staff. Vi|ready, the virtual interview tool, is part of the curriculum offered and will remain so. Also in development is EduEx, online courses in Social Skills, Career Readiness, Independent Living, and Financial Literacy will be available to the public in late fall.

Due to the pandemic, we knew that our technology tools needed to serve a larger population of individuals. We upgraded VI ready, our interactive job interview tool using avatars as potential employers, to an online version and increased the EduEx library, our online learning system of social advocacy and career readiness courses, by adding financal literacy courses and videos that assist employers to engage diverse populations. More software developments are in the works.

Labs were constructed on campus allowing for hands-on experiences in the hospitality field. Marino Café was instrumental in providing instruction in the culinary/hospitality fields. All safety measures are continuing on campus and at community events. While everyone is suffering from the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, the people we serve face even greater hardships. Many have limited to no income, and the unemployment rate is still over 80%. Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income, programs that offer some financial security for this population, don’t allow for saving, even for emergencies, since recipients who are employed must earn under a certain amount to retain these benefits. Most are not able to earn over $18,240 per year, allowing little to no cushion for those individuals who may have a reduction in or loss of employment due to the pandemic. To alleviate these issues, the Foundation is creating new technologies and programs to ensure all we serve are able to continue learning and being supported both in-person and virtually.
