How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Farm Share was unable to meet with potential food and monetary donors. We were unable to have anyone over to the warehouse to show them our operations so we had to shift fast into digital and start all donor and communications, online. We had to shift our operations and start distributing food in very efficient ways in order to feed the almost 6.7 million Floridians who needed assistance in June of 2020.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

This was the biggest shift of all! Our food bank was use to delivery or hand to hand delivery of food. WE has to innovate fast and start TRUCK to TRUNK food distributions in safe and efficient ways. We went from two food distributions a week to 4 to 5 a day. We has to find a way to have multiple events and to have them all have the same system of operations that would allow food to go from the truck to the trunks of cars with no contact with the consumer. All volunteers required masking and gloves with huge restrictions on who could serve depending on health symptoms. The adaptation we made for COVID-19 was one of the most significant to the recovery and response to the pandemic.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Our team went into a high efficiency mode. Our logistics had to ramp up and we had to go to a whole new system of food distribution. Normally, we dealt with food pantries or hand to hand distributions. During the pandemic we had to adapt to a system with no contact with the public. The TRUCK to TRUNK system was created and started by Farm Share during the pandemic in order to distribute food in a safe way for all who were working and those receiving the food.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Our high focus on efficiency. We are working the entire state of Florida with less than 100 employees!

We have a vast system of communications. We have focused on digital communications as well as social media and website maintenance. Our organization has made huge strides forward when it comes to email communication with our subscribers and past donors. In addition to all mentioned above, we attend conferences for farmers and potential donors as well as community events to tell the community about our work and how they can access food. Our CEO and COO are often at community events or utilizing our platforms to communicate with our donors, local college students, community groups, religious organizations, elected officials and members of our state legislature in order to talk about needed support and our operations. As a food bank we work with multiple media and community partners to raise awareness as well as many nonprofits in order to expand our reach.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Farm Shares adaptation was vast. We had to continue operations through the pandemic by adapting to the new way of operations. We had to create the TRUNK to TRUCK system that was adopted by all food distributions in Florida. Adaptation was a huge reason for our success in being able to distribute over 111 million pounds of food from March of 2020 to March of 2121.
