We offer six programs that work together to help keep our clients healthy, safe, and independent in their communities. These include: Meals on Wheels, CC Cafes, Friendly Visitors, the Fall Prevention Program, Health & Wellness, and Care Management.

Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.


Meals on Wheels Diablo Region reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
  • Program Delivery


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

We saw a 40% increase in clients needing meals and services. Many part time staff had to transition to full time to meet the needs of our vulnerable population. Because seniors had a fragile support system, staff were not only arranging extra routes, but they were picking up prescriptions, adult diapers and other essentials seniors could not access. We had to make a substantial investment in masks, gloves, face shields, hand sanitizer, as well as bags and special containers so that we could deliver meals to a client's front porch, instead of handing the meal to them or going into the home to leave the meal. We started a Breakfast Bag program for very food insecure seniors and a Grocery Bag Program for seniors who could cook a simple meal, but could not get food at the food bank. We also started a Friendly Helper program to assist with getting needed items for seniors. The increase of clients will continue as many needed our services, but were not getting them before the pandemic.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We could no longer have face to face delivery. We needed to now ring the bell, leave the food by the door, step away and make sure the senior picked up their meal. This created more insolation in seniors. We transitioned our Friendly Visitor Program to a caller program to make sure seniors were not as isolated. Our cafes closed and we needed to offer weekly food pick-up or in some cases we needed to deliver to seniors. We went from 7 fresh meals five days a week, to 7 frozen meals. Some seniors didn't have microwaves. We needed to secure them. Some seniors didn't have refrigerators that could hold frozen meals. We had to make adjustments. The frozen meals did not fit in volunteers cars. We had to get the local bus service, who was not operating, to drive our volunteers and the large containers of food to seniors on the routes. We had to make adjustments daily, but NO SENIOR MISSED A MEAL! We prevented 2 suicides. Worked with seniors in abusive situations and others facing evictions


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We increased routes, created new delivery processes, partnered with the school district for meals for the increased number of clients. We developed new programs to meet unmet needs - Friendly Helper, Breakfast Bags because some seniors were rationing the one meal we deliver to have food for lunch, dinner and to take at night with medications. Created the Grocery Bag program. Our exercise classes went online and we created a lending library of tablets and when cases were down, did an in-person training so that seniors could take classes and stay engaged. We needed to increase staff to keep up with the increase of 40% more clients, a number that is not going down as many seniors are not bouncing back from being home for almost 2 years. We used our expertise to help seniors from being evicted, secure veteran's benefits and other community services so they could remain at home with dignity. Increased the number of volunteers making calls to do safety checks on seniors.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

With adequate funding, we plan to keep all the programs we started - Friendly Helper, Breakfast Bag Program, Grocery Bag Program, tablet lending library - because we found there were people who needed our services who were not receiving them prior to the pandemic and we recognized unmet needs. Also seniors are not bouncing back from the pandemic and more and more are turning to us. Plus seniors are the fastest growing segment of the population in our county and are often the hidden hungry. We will continue to increase delivery routes. In a financially challenged part of the county, we created a program that helps seniors access community services and fill out forms for government and social services. This is a bilingual program to help this marginalized group of seniors. Additionally, we have begun creating our literature in multiple languages to help our diverse population, and we will continue to do that.
