...   Impact & Results

Charity Navigator assesses how well a nonprofit delivers on its mission. To issue an Impact & Results score, we estimate the actual impact a nonprofit has on the lives of those it serves, and determine whether it is making good use of donor resources to achieve that impact.

No Score

We have not issued this nonprofit an Impact & Results score. This does not indicate a positive or negative assessment, only that we have not reached a conclusion for one of the following reasons:

  • The nonprofit is eligible for a score, but we have not yet gotten to scoring it.

  • The nonprofit is eligible for a score, but we have not yet developed the specific algorithms to estimate the impact of the type of service it delivers and so cannot issue a score yet.

  • The nonprofit does not primarily deliver services directly to beneficiaries or it is not reasonable to expect the nonprofit to measure impact for its primary activity. The impact analysis framework that we use is not well suited to these nonprofits.

  • The nonprofit is not heavily reliant on individual donors because beneficiaries fund a majority of its costs or it does not receive any private charitable contributions.

What is your organization aiming to accomplish?

Youth Leadership Institute believes that now as much as ever, youth voices can speak on behalf of our most highly impacted communities to affect change at decision-making tables. Youth Leadership Institute believes that the youth of color and their white allies that partner in our programs are the leaders that we need to develop in this country to become the future decision makers, elected officials, and advocates for our communities.

What are your strategies for making this happen?

Youth Leadership Institute believes that through 1) investing in the leadership development of our youth, 2) developing the skill to research issues that they care about, 3) engaging in media literacy analysis and storytelling training, and 4) helping youth to lead campaigns based on these skills that have been developed, that we are equipping youth to build the communities that most reflect their own identities.

What are your organization's capabilities for doing this?

Youth Leadership Institute has a team of 50 staff who come from the communities which we serve, many of whom have gone through our programs themselves, who lead this work alongside our youth. Over 27 years, we have developed evidence based curricula and training modules which we utilize to develop more than 1700 young people every single week.

How will your organization know if you are making progress?

At the end of each year we assess the number of policies that our youth have passed, the number of youth we work with, their proficiency in different tasks related to self advocacy, and their self assessment of their belief in the community to work with youth to make change.

What have and haven't you accomplished so far?

As of July 2018, youth in our program have used the skills developed at Youth Leadership Institute to educate law makers and pass 122 laws and policies across California.
