How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

We had four responses from funders due to the pandemic: reduced funding, suspended funding, no change in funding, or increased funding. We received a PPP loan as well as additional funding for COVID, so we have been able to continue operations with minimal program impact.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We quickly adapted to focus on preventing the spread of the virus while continuing project development work as best we could. Our health/hygiene education program was most impacted. Because of social distancing and safe protocols to prevent virus spread, many trainings, community chats, and home visits were suspended. While this initially seems negative, we saw community members trained as volunteer hygiene educators step up and show the sustainability of our program. The pandemic has shown us what our community partners can do when our staff are unable to walk alongside them. Isabel, volunteer community educator in El Mombacho: “We are continuing the trainings in order to keep working. We are doing the work because there are projects to be done. Even though there is a pandemic and we were just starting our community well, we are doing the cleaning, keeping our distance, working with masks on, and using hand sanitizer.”


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Our staff adapted quickly, recording radio broadcasts focused on disease prevention and hiring circulating trucks to broadcast prevention information. We created a Spanish-only Facebook page focused on prevention information and sent daily hygiene-focused text messages to rural partners. We printed hygiene education/disease prevention stickers and posters, putting them up in store-fronts, in homes, on handwashing stations, and in other visible locations. We put up road signs with prevention messages. We created videos for sharing on social media as well as for airing on national television. Messages ranged from the importance of handwashing, how to greet people without shaking hands, protecting the elderly, how to wash hands properly, and how disease spreads. Additionally, we distributed 1,806 handwashing stations with soap to families, schools, and health posts. We continue to support health posts, health clinics, and regional hospitals with PPE, soap, hand sanitizer, and chlorine.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We learned how well we can work remotely with our rural partners. As electricity and cell phone usage expands across rural Nicaragua, we can communicate effectively by phone, text, social media, and more. While we look forward to doing more in-person trainings in the future, we will continue the remote work as well, especially during the rainy season that can make roads impassable.

One of our core values is learning, and we encourage all staff to continue learning. While the last 18 months have all been during a pandemic, we have encouraged online trainings in WASH Systems, fundraising, accounting systems, program monitoring and evaluation, and Salesforce (for programs and fundraising). Additionally, we were part of the organizing team for a sanitation conference (NicaSan) that we both presented at and participated in.

We have partnerships with other nonprofits as well as local government. For example, we are working with another nonprofit now on water testing and treatment as well as setting up a circuit rider program for project sustainability. We have presented at conferences in Nicaragua (such as NicaSan mentioned above) as well as in the United States to Rotary Clubs, water engineers, and more. We do extensive community building, organizing, and training as part of program work; many communities after working with us go on to use the skills they've learned to advocate for themselves by requesting better schools, roads, etc. We are active members of RASNIC (The Nicaraguan Network of Water and Sanitation Organizations, often holding leadership roles). We are active on social media in Nicaragua and the U.S.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


2020 was a year of changes. Rural communities in Nicaragua already struggled to meet basic needs like water. Suddenly, the world was more dangerous for villagers and our staff who travel from community to community potentially getting the disease or spreading it. So, we pivoted. El Porvenir bought airtime on TV with messages on how to stop the spread of Covid that reached over half the country. We placed public service announcements on local radio stations in the regions where we work. Staff put up posters, stickers, and road signs with prevention information; and we distributed PPE, handwashing and cleaning supplies to rural health posts, town health clinics, and regional hospitals. We also supplied 1,806 emergency handwashing stations to families, schools, and healthcare facilities so that rural families could keep their families safe. And, being as safe as possible, we figured out how to keep development projects moving forward. In partnership with communities, we completed 31 water projects, 568 latrines, 19 school handwashing stations, 6,000 meters of watershed terracing and helped plant 122,425 trees. Our staff and community leaders just didn’t quit. As if a global pandemic wasn’t enough in November 2020, the northeast corner of Nicaragua was devastated by two back-to-back hurricanes (one CAT-4 and one CAT-5), dropping as much as 20 inches of rain in some areas and causing catastrophic flooding and landslides. Tens of thousands of homes were washed away. Crops were decimated. And El Porvenir staff quickly mobilized, assessed the damage, and began working with 90 impacted communities to repair water and sanitation infrastructure and supply seeds for replanting. Together, our donors, our staff, and community leaders in Nicaragua proved once again what is possible.
