How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

In the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw the demand for home-delivered meals go up as more seniors experienced limited income and hesitance to go out to the grocery store. Our organization was very fortunate to see an increase in grants as well as donations from individuals. The onset of the pandemic was a very stressful time for our clients and we knew we had to make sure seniors still had access to healthy meals. This was all made possible by our generous donors.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we had to completely rethink our program. Because we serve a high-risk population, the health and safety of our clients was our number one concern. Previously, our subcontractors were delivering daily hot meals to seniors and volunteers were providing regular friendly visits in the seniors’ homes. We had to pivot our operations to no-contact once-weekly frozen meals and friendly visits turned into friendly phone calls. Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa and our subcontractors have always emphasized the importance of providing for not only our clients physical needs, but also their emotional needs. In the past year and a half, we have found creative ways to combat loneliness in isolation without putting our clients at an increased health risk.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We shifted our program to include once weekly frozen meals instead of our usual daily hot meals. At the beginning of the pandemic, we shifted from seven to five meals a week to be able to serve more seniors. Shortly after, we switched back to seven meals a week as we found that we had enough money in the budget. We also sent out surveys to our clients and had regular phone calls to check in and see how they liked the new method of delivery. We learned to be flexible as we had to adapt to changing conditions. In 2020, we saw our biggest fundraising year since our founding in 1990. We were also very fortunate to have volunteers step up to the plate to deliver meals in the middle of the pandemic. MOWCC owes our success to our incredible donors, volunteers and contractors who make it all possible.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We are continuing to survey our clients on their preferences for frozen versus hot meals and will use this to inform how we deliver our program in the future. While once weekly frozen meal gives seniors more free time I their week, some do miss the daily interactions with delivery drivers. We are still determining in which ways our program will change. The pandemic has taught us to be adaptable and that there is more than one way to deliver our services. Internally, staff operations have changed as well. We are now utilizing more virtual resources, updating our technology, and streamlining our processes. We are now more prepared for uncertain circumstances and know how to better handle the next emergency.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa is collaborative in many respects. Structurally, our organization is part of network of other entities that work in tandem to ensure there are no gaps in service for hungry seniors. The Contra Costa County Senior Nutrition Program oversees the Meals on Wheels program and utilities three subcontractors to coordinate delivery of services, while Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa acts as the primary fundraising body for the program. Our organization is constantly working with all these other organizations that are involved in the countywide program to solve problems, come up with new ideas, and coordinate efforts for the benefit of our clients. MOWCC also has many well-established relationships with local community organizations such as Kiwanis Clubs, Women’s Guilds, County Supervisors’ offices, community foundations, and small-businesses.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


As we have adjusted to external changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to rethink how to best serve our clients’ needs. At the height of the pandemic, the program shifted from once daily hot meals to once weekly frozen meals to limit contact with seniors for their own safety. Though we were initially conservative with our funding; not knowing what the future held, 2020 was our largest fundraising year to date. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to provide meals for more seniors than ever before as more people needed Meals on Wheels services. We also used this time of change as an opportunity to reevaluate positions, procedures, and the status quo to better suit our emergent needs.
