Donations were significantly down, especially in the areas of corporate and special events. We did successfully receive a PPP loan, but unfortunately had to reduce our staff size by 35% after PPP funds were expended. Many grants allowed us to redirect committed funds to cover salaries and operating costs, but we are still relying on those grants to fully operate at this time.
Due to health mandates and social distancing requirements, the majority of our in-person programming ceased for over a year. We quickly moved to a virtual platform for our fitness and health programming, but this did not allow us to have the same level of impact as our program typically sees.
Virtual programming has received much greater emphasis during the pandemic. We have also adjusted the way we deliver our in-person programs by reducing the number of participants, following increased social distancing and sanitation protocols, conducting testing of program participants and limiting spectators.
We will definitely keep elements of our virtual programming in place because it has allowed us to reach a new audience that we were not connecting with prior to the pandemic.

Special Olympics Louisiana began in 1968 when 11 athletes from Belle Chasse State School competed in the first International Special Olympics Games in Chicago. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Currently, more than 12,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Louisiana participate in more than 120 local competitions in the 9 areas and state-level competitions.

Identified areas were quickly addressed with plans for either short-term, easy and quick to implement changes or longer-term, systemic changes to the way we have historically operated.
