    Special Olympics Texas started in 1969, and has grown to become one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world with 58,884 athletes, 4,554 coaches and 40,281 volunteers. <br><br>The mission of Special Olympics Texas is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation], giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
