Vision

Bats have been maligned for decades due to myths and misconceptions. Additionally, captive bats are typically treated very poorly in zoos, nature centers and the like, primarily due to a lack of understanding regarding the intelligence and complicated social structure of bats. Our vision includes an understanding by the general public that bats are an essential part of nature, and to one day regard bats in the same light as birds, bees and other wildlife critical to our own survival on earth. We also envision a day when captive bats will have the lives they deserve, with spacious flight areas, nutritious foods, and enrichment to occupy their intelligent minds.

Goals

1. 1.We are actively working with the Animal Welfare division of the USDA in order to better the minimum standards for captive bats.
2. 2.Build a stand-alone classroom on Bat World Sanctuary's property in order to give bat rehabilitation workshops, animal control classes, and educational classes to school children.
3. 3.Changing Texas law that currently allows killing bat colonies during nursery season when helpless young are present, and instead using humane exclusion methods outside the months of maternity season.
