Balance Sheet
We switched our annual fundraising concert to a virtual format, which had a negative impact on viewership and donations. Earned revenue streams, particularly through the DoD and VA, were placed on hold instead of switching to telehealth (which all grant-funded programs did). Overall revenue declined by 15% while expenses increased by 4%. We did receive a PPP loan and thus were able to retain the full staff.
Resounding Joy moved all programs to a telehealth format, when feasible. Some on-site programs were placed on hold, such as those at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Wesley Palms Retirement Community, and anything conducted by volunteers.
Resounding Joy's switch to telehealth music therapy included that for medically and emotionally resilient children (private and group sessions), service members and veterans (private and group sessions), and other initiatives (online drum circles, partnerships with the Hausmann Quartet on material for children, etc). Music therapists worked from home, and grant funding from the Music Man Foundation was reallocated with their permission to required equipment.
Telehealth music therapy will remain a permanent option for any client, and the music therapy team now has the gear to conduct these sessions professionally and at a high audio/visual quality. We will retain our subscription to Zoom Healthcare and offer some programs virtually, especially for groups with transportation challenges. The music therapy staff will also continue to enjoy a more flexible working environment.

The nonprofit provides evidence of investment in leadership development
Last year, Barbara Reuer received a grant from the Clare Rose Foundation & the Fieldstone Leadership Network San Diego to enjoy a sabbatical (for the first time in the organization's history). This grant also included significant leadership development opportunities for top staff. The Board of Directors has been making substantial changes to its policies, strategies, onboarding process, and other documents over the past year (with the help of a great consultant), which will bring us in line with major non-profits and make us more transparent to our supporters. The Board has also recently welcomed two more members to its ranks, and their input has been valuable in shaping future Board and leadership development.

Policy Advocacy
The team works in partnership with agencies and organizations that have a direct connection to the target population, reducing marketing expenses to solicit clients. These mutually beneficial arrangements have evolved over time, and now many partners are either matching funds for their clients or are actively considering matches. Very rarely does Resounding Joy develop a program without a service partnership, as the team understands that the nonprofit community is stronger when working together. Resounding Joy also has an Advocacy committee that will soon launch the Ambassador program, in which trained volunteers will help the organization network with local policymakers, agencies, and organizations.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
COVID-19 This past year, as people around the country know so well, has been a very difficult year for everyone. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives to COVID-19, millions lost their jobs, multitudes of small businesses and non-profits closed their doors for good or had major disruptions in business. Resounding Joy not only weathered the storm, but also came out stronger as an organization. Our staff and Board of Directors quickly pooled our resources and pivoted to provide our services online as much as possible. Also, the Board of Directors sought additional funding from the government for a loan through the Payroll Protection Program, which helped us end the year with only a small financial loss. This is substantially less than many non-profit organizations. The loan has been forgiven and we are working on a new, similar loan that is forgiven if used for the appropriate purposes. We had a successful virtual campaign at the end of the year and we thank our supporters so much for their donations to our mission and services. RACIAL EQUITY Resounding Joy is devastated by the violence perpetuated by systemic racism against Black Americans. We stand against racism and injustice, and acknowledge the trauma inflicted on people of color, such as the recent attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We have pledged to examine our own biases individually, in our work and in our organizational structure. We pledge to hold a safe space for BIPOC individuals and communities, listen with open hearts, and support however we can. Our racial equity statement is available at: https://resoundingjoyinc.org/racial-equity-statement/
