Educational Opportunities (EdOp) is a small, volunteer-driven organization with one part-time staff member. Board members are selected by a Nominating Committee and newly installed board members are provided with a formal orientation. Board members who seek funding from foundations are provided grant-writing training. Board members who serve as mentors to the students are provided mentor training.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Educational Opportunities (EdOp) is a volunteer organization. Working closely with the Dallas Independent School District (DISD), students apply for an EdOp scholarship through selected DISD magnet high schools—Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Booker T. Washington School for the Performing Arts, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School, and Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. These schools provide administrative counseling while fostering a desire for higher education and encouraging family participation in the educational process. EdOp board members work closely with school counselors familiar with their students' academic records as well as their family and financial situations. EdOp scholars benefitted when the Dallas Young Lawyers 2021 Leadership Class chose EdOp as their designated philanthropy. Thanks to the work of 2 Board Members the Leadership Class designated EdOp as the recipient of the proceeds from the May 2022 Hooping for the Community event.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.

Since its inception in 1965, Educational Opportunities has encountered various challenges and experienced significant successes. However, recent times have been like no other. Despite the COVID interruptions for both our scholars and our Board of Trustees, we can regard our collective efforts and achievements as tremendous triumphs. While some students persevered through virtual learning environments and others navigated the complexities of in-class participation, all completed the year with heads held high and a sense of real accomplishment. Our Board worked tirelessly. Some as mentors to students and all as generous supporters with their time, their talents and their beneficence. The student selection process, though virtual, was seamless, and we welcomed new scholars to our "extended family". We recently celebrated the graduation of 12 competent young men and women, and our fund-raising success was unparalleled.
