How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

The MRF is entirely a donor-supported organization. Being unable to host our year-round calendar of fundraising events and the overall global economic strain caused by the pandemic decreased donation levels and limited our ability to fund research grants, educational programs and support resources at traditional levels.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

The MRF hosts dozens of in-person fundraising events, awareness programs and educational meetings for patients, physicians and researchers each year, as well as the annual "Advocacy Days" summit in Washington, DC. Due to health restrictions and social distancing, none of these were possible. MRF staff worked diligently to adapt to virtual programming where possible. Additionally, the combination of reduced fundraising capacity and the physical closure of many research labs challenged our ability to advance life-saving melanoma research and treatment advances.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

With in-person gatherings impossible, the MRF quickly and creatively shifted our fundraising, education and advocacy work to a virtual environment. This included an online patient symposia series, first-of-their-kind "virtual galas" in five cities across the US, a nationwide 5k run/walk program with virtual celebration ceremonies and a newly developed smartphone app. The MRF also launched a robust and growing online educational library of webinars, animated patient videos, "Ask the Expert" live sessions on our social media channels and more.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

The success of our virtual programming revealed new ways to reach our community members, and we recognize that even in a post-quarantine world, the ability to reach patients, caregivers, researchers and physicians who may not be able to attend an event in person will remain a priority. We anticipate most future events will incorporate a hybrid, virtual element where possible to reach these additional audiences.

The MRF is a Core Member of the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, has hosted a Patient-Led FDA Listening Session to elevate the patient voice of those facing a rare disease and works year-round at the local, state and federal level to raise public awareness of the disease, advance research and improve the quality of care and outcomes for the millions of Americans impacted by melanoma. Through its web and social media presence, the MRF promotes far-reaching campaigns to increase education and awareness of all forms of melanoma and maintains a growing library of educational materials with over 50,000 pieces distributed in 2021, completely free of charge. To advance melanoma science, the MRF participates in multiple global meetings each year and convenes a number of summits, coalitions and international collaborations to unite researchers and physicians around the world.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Beginning in the earliest days of the pandemic and nationwide shutdown, the MRF sought and implemented innovative ways to ensure continuity of programming in all areas of the organization. Our existing fundraising events transitioned to 100% virtual, and multiple new events were added, including virtual galas supporting research labs in two new cities and a nationwide "coast-to-coast run/walk" was added to the 15 city-based events already on the calendar, all of which transitioned to virtual programs. The MRF secured two PPP grants to ensure uninterrupted and fully staffed operations could continue as the rest of the world rolled back operations to "flatten the curve" because for the 1.3 million Americans living with melanoma, waiting was not an option - cancer has no curve.
