How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

The most significant impact was the inability to conduct successful traditional and popular fundraising events, which not only saw a reduction in philanthropic revenue but also engagement from donors, sponsors and volunteer supporters. Overall, there was a nearly $400,000 decrease in net revenue from 2019 to 2020. We are projecting a decrease of approximately $100,000 from 2020 to 2021, which over a two-year period will be close to $500,000. There has been a reduction in the number of major gifts received since 2019. Our three thrift stores were closed over a period of time, creating a reduction in revenue of nearly $200,000.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Created procedures and protocols for safe patient care. Moved grief counseling sessions to online. Utilized telehealth technology when possible. The robust volunteer program was halted, which reduced several programs throughout the organization. Transitioned fundraising events to low contact drive-by and/or virtual events. Fewer opportunities to personally engage with donors, sponsors and volunteers.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Created policies and procedures to protect against COVID infections and continue to safely care for patients. Adjusted our outreach process for care facilities that limited visitors Required all staff who were able to work remotely With the lack of popular fundraising events, we asked sponsors to support with a philanthropic donation at the value of their previous event sponsorship. Connected with donors over Zoom and other technology platforms.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will scale down "fundraising" events, and pursue more major gift donations in lieu of event sponsorships.

Hinds Hospice has invested in continuing education through our Clinical Excellence Program which provides tuition reimbursement for nursing education. We have created the Hinds Hospice Education and Simulation Lab, (the only one of its kind in the western United States). We have engaged with Pride Philanthropy to help our development staff and leadership team to improve our resource development efforts. We have engaged with Predictive Index, a leadership tool to better predict and drive workplace behavior and awareness. In addition, our senior management team is in the process of completing a Dare To Lead program, based on the best-selling Brene Brown book.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


The past year has been a stress test for our procedures, policies, staff, and leadership. It was a challenging year, but in many ways, we have come through stronger for the effort. The difficulty in providing healthcare during COVID-19 is well documented. Hospice care is especially challenging as we treat the most vulnerable patients. In addition, we experienced COVID during a national nursing shortage and were at less than full staff for the duration. In spite of the obstacles, were able to care for more patients than at any other time in Hinds Hospice history. We were able to add additional safety measures like the filtration system at our Hospice Home, and technology improvements like telehealth. We continued our grief support programs electronically and helped to sustain those in our community who depend on our services. Financially, we were challenged by the closure of our three thrift stores for the majority of the year. The inability to meet face to face with donors and volunteers. The cancellation or modification of the majority of our fundraising events. In spite of these challenges, we were able to meet our fundraising goals through the generosity of a community that has supported Hinds Hospice for 40 years, and those who recognize the value we add to the communities we serve.
