The SLO Food Bank invests in its Leadership Team, comprising managers, directors, CEO, and COO, through monthly meetings covering various topics beneficial to both new and seasoned managers. For instance, we recently invited an Emergency Management consultant to present on Crisis Communications. During this 60-minute session, the presenter shared best practices, do's and don'ts, and engaged in interactive discussions based on real-world scenarios. Team members were given the chance to play the role of an authorized spokesperson at a press conference, enhancing their skills. Meeting topics are chosen collaboratively to ensure maximum benefit.

Our CEO and COO engage with our community regularly. For example, the CEO is a County Board of Supervisors selected, voting member of our County’s Homeless Services Oversight Council, comprised of local elected officials, social service leaders, and peer nonprofit CEO/Executive Directors from throughout our region. The CEO is also a member of a local service organization, which affords him access to other regional service organizations where he is invited to speak to community leaders. Our leadership engages city, county, state, and federal elected officials through correspondence and in-person meetings. Our leadership team maintains a strong presence in local television, radio, print, and social media, with mission-centric messages shared across these platforms regularly. Our leadership maintains membership on local business committees and councils, including the Chamber of Commerce Legislative Action Committee.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Over the last 18 months we’ve responded to historic public health, social, and financial crises, which have significantly impacted our operations and the need for our services in the community. Specifically, we’ve adjusted our staffing, operations, and messaging to overcome surges in COVID, crushing inflation, the expiration of federal hunger relief programs, and newly implemented restrictions on eligibility for federal hunger relief. Our guiding light has been our mission, and through all of these challenges, we’ve continued to serve historic levels of hunger in our community consistently, dependably, and without compromise.
