This organization was impacted by COVID-19 in a way that effected their financial health in 2020. This normally would have reduced their star rating. Due to the unprecedented nature of the pandemic, we give charities such as this one the opportunity to share the story of COVID's impact on them, and doing this pauses our revision of their rating. Charities may submit their own pandemic responses through their nonprofit portal.
Arts Visalia reported being impacted by COVID-19 in the following ways:
Program Delivery
Fundraising Capacity
Revenue
Grants Received
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:
We applied for and received PPP funding which allowed us to keep our part time staff working on at-home art kits during the time we were closed.. Our art sales were down 10%, youth art classes revenue was down 62% and our donations were reduced by 52%.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
Due to COVID restrictions we had to close the gallery March 2020 to March 2021 and use virtual tours on our website of exhibitions. We are still requiring masks and social distancing. We were unable to have our adult and youth art classes and had to instead create and mail at-home art kits for our youth program.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We offered virtual tours and artist interviews on our website. We produced monthly at-home art kits for our students instead of art classes. We offered stationery cards printed with watercolor representations of orchids as thanks for donations instead of our 2020 May Orchid Sale where we usually sell 800 orchids. Our staff worked from home and later came into the gallery with masks (still in use) and social distancing.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We will continue to offer virtual tours and artist interviews on our website whenever possible. They were well received during closure of the gallery.

During this current fiscal year we are reading Empowering Your Board to Serve as Effective Development Ambassadors (Marcie Heim) and discussing each chapter at monthly board meetings. Prior to this in 2020 we read Forces for Good - the six practices of high impact non-profits (Leslie Crutchfield) and discussed each of these in board meetings as well. Raising Awareness
Mail Chimp bimonthly newsletters to over 1200 highlighting our art classes and exhibitions. We use Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to let the public know about our offerings. Postcards are sent monthly to over 800 additional names to folks who prefer information by post. Articles in local newspapers and the local Lifestyles Magazine on our yearly orchid sale and other fundraisers. Participation in the local Arts Consortium with one of our board members also on that nonprofit's board. Participation in Create TC, an affiliate of Create California, a coalition advancing education that promotes creativity and the arts.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Our greatest change came with COVID-19 restrictions. During this pandemic we had to change from in-person classes and exhibitions to providing at-home art kits subsidized by scholarships and reduced fees. We also created virtual tours of our exhibits and artist talks. We used social media to keep folks informed and opened the gallery to appointments with numbers of participants limited for social distancing. We are now open again, but still required masking until it was no longer mandated. We have not yet returned to having food at our monthly first Friday openings but have begun to host these evening social experiences again. We were able to take advantage of government funding locally and statewide which assisted us in keeping staff.
