We started 2020 with big plans for the year. Established in 2010, we would be celebrating a decade of preventing human trafficking with a series of 10 events which would allow us to both celebrate the past and cast a new, bold vision for the future. Of course, all but one of those events had to be canceled and many of our ambitious plans had to be put on hold as the world went into a COVID-19 shutdown in March.
2020 was the most challenging year we've faced as an organization so far. Change has been the theme of the year for us, as it has for seemingly everyone in our whole country. We've had to pivot and reorganize, shift strategies and come up with new, creative solutions in order to continue growing towards our goals. On the homefront, we had to become remote workers and homeschool teachers at the same time. Because we had invested a great deal of time and resources to developing online education in 2019, we were able to quickly pivot and move many of our classes online. Tragically though, our access to youth through direct, face-to-face classes, was cut off completely. As a response we've stepped up our outreach efforts online, launched a brand new student-led initiative called Students Ending Exploitation and made our Technology and Trafficking class available to parents, teachers and educators. Still, there's no substitute for in-person education and our teens need us now more than ever.
Our extended family was not spared from tragedy this year either. One of our prevention educators lost both her father and husband to complications related to COVID-19 within the space of a single month. Our hearts were broken as we sought to rally around her as a community when we couldn't even be there with her in person. Thanks to our faithful donors we were able to keep everyone on our team at their same pay but we had to say goodbye to our long-time office manager, Vanessa, as she needed to prioritize her family and care for them more during the pandemic.
