Third Wave Volunteers are a Florida-based disaster relief non-profit, set up to mobilize medical, and non-medical first responder volunteers, and sustainable aid to disadvantaged, and affected communities after natural and man-made disasters. Founded on Sept 11th, 2001 in NYC, and have since grown to over 30,000 volunteers running large refugee camps, field hospitals, and resilience hubs around the world, including the Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, Venezuela, and Ukraine refugee crisis. Who are the people you serve with your mission? Describe briefly.
We serve the underserved lower income communities during natural and man- made disasters who are usually the last to receive help during time off crisis. In the Covid pandemic we are serving the health professionals, first responders, elderly, food pantries, teachers, prisons Native tribes etc with N95 masks and other PPE. The lower income areas we work in are Little Haiti, Liberty City, Homestead and Florida City to name a few.

How has asking for feedback from the people you serve changed your relationship with them or shifted power - over decisions, resources, rules or in other ways - to them?
Its been a beautiful year of collaboration- it has put us on more of an equal setting and they have stated they feel more included as members of the org that is helping them and love that they can be included in our organization decisions. It has created a trust that wasn't there before and has opened up more ideas and help needed for their communities that we hadn't thought of before. Four of the locals from Homestead who have acted as a liaisons to the community have now become Third Wave Volunteer team leaders and we have shifted more responsibility to the community which has taken pressure of us by sourcing volunteers locally.

We don't have any major challenges to collecting feedback
Briefly describe a recent change that your organization made in response to feedback from the people you serve.
When serving in the underserved lower income communities of Homestead and Florida city- we learned that it was not only the poorest areas affected who needed help with food, N95 masks and solar lights but also the middle income families affected and struggling financially in this past year with the covid pandemic putting many people out of work and less income available.

Describe an investment in leadership
TWV invest in leadership train the trainer CERT programs with high school and college students, creating social media safety videos and training programs to empower our youth to become the help before the help arrives. After completing the leadership program each student then trains 10 other peers. During the COVID pandemic of the past 18 months students participated in delivering and sending out 1.8 million N95 masks to hospitals, first responders and communities in 50 states. Leadership roles included overseeing the management, packing, shipping and the follow through delivery of the PPE and coordinating with our UPS and other sponsors. Those students are now team leaders and trainers within the TWV community.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?
In 2017, after Hurricane Irma -TWV helped create the Miami-Dade CEOC (Community Emergency Operations Center) working alongside 160 Miami-Dade non-profits/public and/or private sector organizations joined together to mobilize under the banner of the Miami Climate Alliance to help create collaborative partnerships and coalition community building during the annual Florida hurricane season (June 1st to Nov 31st.) The overall goal is to unite all the organizations and a wide-range of community members to participate as one unit in getting help for the underserved/minority communities. The CEOC opens each year during hurricane season and is linked to the larger Emergency Operations Center in Miami-Dade County. During the non-hurricane season members of the Miami Climate alliance meet for disaster preparedness training and plan activities, events, surveys, solutions and recruit volunteers based around the natural disasters of Florida.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The Covid pandemic shut down the entire world and along with it many of our local and International aid projects and volunteers. We had to pivot fast as we had been tracking covid-19 in early January and had started buying N95 masks and other PPE to donate to health providers nationwide. TWV now had over 10,000’s disaster nurses and other medical volunteers stuck in a pandemic crisis in their own hospitals and communities. We set to work from our own garages and used our local high school and college volunteers to help with the management, packing and delivery of N95 masks and other PPE being sent to our own TWV nurses and doctors homes who then shared with their coworkers at their own hospitals. This grew into a larger relationship and collaboration with other health providers nationwide and then expanded to rescue workers, fire rescue, police, nursing homes, prisons, food pantries, elderly homes, schools, Navajo tribes and so on. During the pandemic shutdown we had to create a workable system out of our local volunteers garages where there weren’t more than 6 volunteers working at a time so shifts were set up to work around the clock in a safe environment wearing PPE. We ended up sending out over 1.8 million N95 masks to 50 states and the Bahamas, Haiti, Canada and Puerto Rico. To document this journey we created a GIS mapping system where each mask delivered was documented by its zipcodes onto a map of USA. The map is available for viewing on our website. (thirdwavevolunteers.com ). Along with the PPE journey we started working with our local Miami- Dade food pantries ( Joshua Foundation and Bridge to Hope) and we sent TWV volunteers into underserved communities to deliver food packages and N95 masks. Social distancing was observed and food boxes were placed into the trunks of peoples cars to keep volunteers safe. Our role became to help support the underserved communities of Homestead, Florida City, Overtown and Little Haiti.
