Sentient
Mission
Sentient is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that publishes stories and solutions to explain factory farms and their effect on climate, animals, public health, politics and more. Founded in 2018, Sentient’s content is fact-checked and science-driven, with reporting that serves readers who are interested in the impacts of what they eat on animals, climate, water, conditions for workers — and so much more. Our content is available free of charge, without a paywall or advertisers. Our donors and board have no editorial influence on content. Through training and partnerships, Sentient also works to boost informed media coverage of factory farming. Our report conducted with Faunalytics found that 93 percent of climate media ignores the impact of meat on greenhouse gas emissions. This report reached over 700 million people — and over 700 reporters and academics attended our launch event for the study.
Vision
Our code of ethics: Seek Truth and Report It: We commit to accuracy, fairness, and honesty in reporting on humans, animals, and the natural world. We prioritize original sources, present them in context, and consider their motives. Minimize Harm: We treat all individuals—sources, subjects, colleagues, and the public—with respect. We promote transparency in the treatment of animals and environmental issues, believing all beings deserve lives free from unnecessary harm. Act Independently: We serve the public by seeking to enlighten and provide valuable insights. By proxy, we serve our media partners, who in turn serve their audiences. We strive to provide our media partners with journalism of high quality and integrity, equal to that of our own reporting. Be Accountable and Transparent: We take responsibility for our work as journalists publishing news and investigative reporting. We welcome dissent and encourage collaboration.
Goals
- 1.We currently host a Food & Farming Media Network (FFMN) which is a members-only space for journalists at all stages of their careers who want to learn about and report on food systems and factory farming more effectively. Our goal is to refresh this program to better serve our members. We plan to do this through a variety of new resources and networking opportunities.
- 2.We are in the process of reviewing compensation and medical benefits for our staff. We also plan to hire a variety of new positions, including hiring an experienced investigative journalist, an experienced rural reporter to report on factory farming/food from a rural perspective, and an operations and people manager.
- 3.We have evaluated our current programs and services in 2024 and have already/plan to cut back on those that no longer serve the organization. In 2025, we will focus our efforts on refreshing and expanding our existing program, the Food & Farming Media Network, and continue focusing our energy on coverage, partnerships, and collaborations that expand our reach and support our goals and mission.
