    Adaptability Practices
    30 out of 30 points
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year
We could not conduct our annual campaigns or visit the Great Pacific Garbage Patch due to COVID-19 concerns for the crew on a sailing vessel during a voyage of several weeks with no landfall, limited comms, and no access to healthcare. These voyages are central to our mission, essential to documenting plastic waste in the ocean, and fundamental to researching and assisting other researchers working on the ocean plastic problem. Because of this, our public exposure was reduced during COVID, and thus our donations/revenue are lower. We decided to take advantage of the downtime caused by COVID-19 to update and streamline some administrative tasks, increase the efficiency of our donations systems, create bettor methods of engagement, ultimately reduce our administration requirements. Reducing our administration requirements by automating and reducing redundancy allows us to spend more time researching and being in the field. Some examples are simplified donation payment methods, a revamped website with integrated processes, a new marketing campaign system with CRM, created product stores with proceeds donated to OPDERA, additional registrations on referral and charity support organizations, and listing sites. Running the non-profit should be smoother when we are actively researching ocean plastic again now that we have improved our administrative and communications systems.
