The community supported us with increased and new gifts so we were able to scale up operations to address the increased need.

We changed our distribution methods to keep partners, volunteers, and staff as safe as possible. We were not able to stop operations, we increased our output, so we did our best to limit covid transmission.

We still needed volunteers, but we kept them in small groups, did temperature checks, and enforced social distancing. We closed our distribution centers to anyone who was not critical to operations (including donors, reporters, and partner agencies).

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Right away we knew the community would need us more than ever, so closing was not an option. Office workers were sent home to work but most of our employees were needed on site to pick orders, drive forklifts, manage volunteers, and drive trucks. So, safety protocols were put in place. In our fiscal year 2020/2021 we budgeted distributing 19.6 million pounds of food. We actually distributed 25 million pounds of food. Some of our distribution outlets closed so we had to find new ways of getting to our neighbors in need. We began to do more direct distribution such as our Sunny Side Markets (food pantries) and Mobile Markets.
