Mission

IT IS OUR MISSION TO CREATE AND PROTECT A NETWORK OF SHORTGRASS PRAIRIE PRESERVES TO ENSURE A FUTURE FOR ALL NATIVE ANIMALS AND PLANTS. Despite being one of the largest and most unique biomes in the world, shortgrass prairie is also among the most threatened habitats in North America, with 50% already lost due to human development. Just 150 years ago, immense herds of bison millions-strong roamed the Southern Plains, prairie dog colonies spanned hundreds of square miles, and pronghorn and elk teemed across the shortgrass prairie. We want this biodiversity and abundant wildlife back. So far, we’ve protected over 60,000 acres in our preserve network, providing urgently needed refuge to a wide variety of native grassland animals and plants. Piece by piece, we are restoring the American Serengeti.

Goals

1.We want to keep expanding our wildlife preserve network across state boundaries, to ensure that as much of the native Great Plains can be protected in future generations.
2.We want to create refuges for endangered and threatened wildlife, which will have specific habitat requirements. This will result in a diverse portfolio of wildlife refuges including riparian habitats, sandsage habitat, cottonwood groves, streams and creeks, juniper mesas and open spaces.
3.We want to create opportunity for community engagement in our wildlife preserves and therefor will invest in the capacity of our organization.
