APNM is a statewide nonprofit that protects animals by creating social change resulting in the humane treatment of all animals. We create policies, infrastructure, and services that protect animals and strengthen our communities, and we design and implement humane and pragmatic solutions to seemingly intractable problems involving animals. In conjunction with our legislative arm, Animal Protection Voters, we change entrenched systems that harm animals, demonstrating to the public and policymakers that the wellness of our society overall is directly and inextricably linked to the wellbeing of all animals. APNM through its legislative arm engages in advocacy and legislative efforts to achieve systematic change for animals in New Mexico. We partner with other animal organizations (animal shelters, equine rescue and animal shelters), the animal veterinary board, tribal entities, school districts, domestic violence agencies, and food networks to work toward a more humane normal for animals in our state. We partner with local community foundations and participate in free trainings and networking opportunities they offer for staff. We have a dedicated marketing and communications team which communicates internally and externally to raise awareness and support for the work we do.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
In addition to the effects of the pandemic New Mexico was ravaged by historical wildfires in the spring of 2022. Although not an official disaster response agency Animal Protection New Mexico stepped up and and provided 26,350 lbs. of equine feed directly to those communities affected by the wildfires, supported over 1,000 companion animals animals affected and distributed 1,500 lbs. of plant-based food to families in need. This was funded through emergency grants we applied for and generous donations from our supporters.
