Mission: Founded in 1939, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society is the largest animal shelter and care facility in Northern New Mexico. More than 5,000 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals come through our doors each year. We work to reunite people with their lost animal companions, and re-home those animals who have gone unclaimed into new homes through several methods, including adoptions, fosters and transfers. Low- and no-cost spay/neuter programs address the overpopulation problems that our community faces. Humane education programs in our local schools teach children to respect and care for all living creatures. Partnered with our community, we work for change in the lives of our companion animals and to end the suffering of all animals.

The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Our resale store sales, which provide a significant amount of our income, declined by 32% in 2020. In addition, donations to our organization declined by 18.5% in 2020. We also applied and received a PPP loan and thus were able to employ a full staff.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

COVID-restrictions caused us to temporarily close our spay/neuter clinic, halt our Trap-Neuter-Return program, and cease in-person training classes such as our puppy classes. We also halted nearly all of our volunteer program activities.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We began adoptions by appointment only, reducing the number of people on campus at a time. We began online dog training classes. We instituted enhanced cleaning protocols and other safety initiatives so that our staff could be safe while continuing to provide essential services.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue to provide some online training classes for people that prefer that delivery method. We will continue some aspects of curbside veterinary services. We will explore using video meetings more often. We will continue admissions by appointment for non-urgent cases.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

We partner with several local non-profits that provide human sheltering services. We provide pet boarding for the clients of the human shelters, including homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, and addiction facilities. Several of our staff have presented at animal welfare conferences. We provide ongoing free community classes on such topics as Dog Park Etiquette and Hiking with your Dog. We are an active member of the Best Friends network, working to reduce overpopulation nationwide. We have a strong social media presence (70,000 followers on Facebook alone) and use the platforms to educate and inspire animal lovers across the world.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


Animal sheltering always requires adaption and flexibility, and this last year proved no different. As an essential service provider, we had to adjust quickly when COVID hit. We installed sneeze guards, began daily temperature taking of staff, reduced the number of staff on site at any given time, enhanced our cleaning protocols, and much more so that we could continue to provide our most base mission: take in homeless animals, provide them with comfort and care, and find them new homes. We were able to do that 7 days/week, without a break, during the entire year. Throughout it all, we maintained a live release rate of 95.8%, even better than the prior year. We adjusted to curbside veterinary care when restrictions called for it, quickly developing a text system for clients to communicate with our veterinarians and staff. While restrictions initially called for our spay/neuter clinic to be closed, we reopened as soon as allowed and quickly started making up for lost time, spaying or neutering 5,558 animals in 2020. We continued to provide behavioral support to adopters and community members alike, utilizing video messaging.
