How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

Donations poured into our organization as we saw an immediate 600% increase in NEW clients at the onset of the pandemic. We received one PPP loan at the beginning of the pandemic as well, that was eventually forgiven.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We were forced to close down the children's area due to staffing reductions and the concerns over Covid. We also closed our clothing room for almost three months before opening it back up by appointment only to control the number of people in the room at one time. Initially food donations dwindled and we were required to purchase items as means to keep our food boxes plentiful and nutritious.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We offered virtual workshops for clients, made sure all staff and volunteers had the required PPE (masks are still required for all inside the building), and adjusted the clothing room protocol which allows fewer clients to shop at one time.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We will continue purchasing fresh produce as money allows to ensure its nutritional value is robust. We will continue to reduce the number of volunteers needed during services and all staff will continue to spend our time during services in front of customers.

NourishPHX partners with organizations such as St. Joseph the Worker, United Healthcare and DES to provide direct and peripheral resources for our clients. Staff also belongs to several professional organizations such as Food Bank Network and Arizona Association of Non-Profits. Our marketing consultants have been very successful in getting us in front of the media and on social networks to share our story. Finally, we partner with Pinnacle Prevention on their Fresh Connections program which picks up and delivers fresh produce from local growers to our facility to distribute to our clients.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


FY 2020-2021 was a year of “Great Risks and Great Rewards” for NourishPHX. We planned, pivoted, and pressed on to deliver our programs; supplemental food and clothing, SNAP and AHCCCS enrollment assistance and job search/attainment resources. Despite the raging pandemic we never closed our doors but were forced to adjust frequently to the waves of Covid. The need to space people out called for creating an indoor queue that spanned several rooms. The clothing room closed initially but we eventually opened it back up by appointment only. Our normal flow of much-needed volunteers dried up in March of 2020 but just a few weeks later, we were saved by the National Guard who remain with us today. We served too many grandparents who had taken in their grandchildren due to domestic violence or the death of their parents from Covid. We reassured the under- and unemployed workers that we would indeed make sure they could put a meal on the table for their family. We developed partnerships with local retailers willing to donate their unsellable clothes so our clients could "shop" for brand new dresses, shirts, pants and shoes. The Phoenix Symphony members played for people in line, Clip Dart gave free hair cuts at our facility over the holidays and we celebrated our new mural at our "Arts and Carts" event. During this time, we have always strived to be compassionate and responsive to anyone who comes through our doors despite the challenges this year imposed.
