Mission: Since 1989, New Pathways for Youth has positively impacted the lives of more than 5,500 at-risk youth, with dramatic and demonstrable success. In its first year, New Pathways provided mentoring services to 40 youths from the Greater Phoenix area. Today, there are over 500 youths served annually.

Throughout its history, New Pathways has developed programming that transforms the lives of at-risk youth through the power of mentoring. Having grown by acquisition of mentoring programs over the years, the organization has become a thought leader in transformative mentoring programs.

New Pathways serves youth whose needs go far beyond companionship. The youth face environmental circumstances (poverty, gangs, substance abuse, violence, etc.) that have resulted in problematic and disruptive attitudes and behaviors. New Pathways for Youth facilitates transformative relationships between youth ages 9 - 21 and adult mentors, to help these youth reach their greatest possible potential.

How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

In 2020, as a primarily philanthropically run organization, certain budgeted revenue was not received as individuals and corporations were impacted by the pandemic, thus impacting their ability to give. Funding sources also changed funding priorities in ways that impacted revenue.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Our programming had to pivot to virtual formats initially. Our case management services had to drastically increase to insure our youth and their families had access to different needs. Our mentors were also impacted by the pandemic, requiring more support from our case management team. We also had to pause on new youth enrollment and expansion as those occur at in-person programming. This delayed our enrollment projections.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We made several adaptions during the pandemic. All program offerings shifted to online formats. We shifted programming to accommodate virtual experiences. We added weekly calls to connect our communities. We had to connect our youth and families with critical resources related to the pandemic such as virtual access and basic needs (ie. toiled paper). We paused on hiring, requiring us to combine certain position responsibilities to allow for expense savings. We implemented ample safety protocols.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

We've found some areas where virtual formats worked better (for example, training for our volunteer mentors). Additionally, we've expanded the way of seeing fundraising events/meetings/opportunities to consider some virtual options. We also saw opportunities in our staffing structure that we've adjusted based on learnings in the pandemic. Additionally, certain safety protocols remain in place.

The organization has implemented a three-director model in partnership with the CEO to lead the organization's strategic goals. Key programmatic and curriculum leaders have gone through a year long integral coaching program to develop coaching capabilities for youth, mentor, and staff development. Each staff and leader has an integral coach for a period. Several female leaders have completed a year long women's leadership program. Board of Directors are also provided leadership and board development opportunities. All staff participate in several development opportunities such as coaching courses, book clubs, etc.

We serve in networks such as Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, Seasons of Sharing, United Way, WestMarc, and many more. New Pathways has expanded marketing outreach using social media, etc. to share our mission and recruit more volunteer mentors. We are developing relationships with local and state government officials to raise awareness of the mission and impact of our services. We offer trainings for our mentors to equip these volunteers in the work that we do.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


New Pathways quickly pivoted the way we offered services as the pandemic progressed. Initially, all services shifted to online formats. Case management increased to ensure our youth and families were connected with basic needs. Additionally, our youth and mentors were greatly impacted by the pandemic and thus our team worked diligently to support our youth and mentors. Instead of offering monthly workshops, our team offered weekly pod calls delivering our curriculum and connecting our community. Once more data was available on how to implement safety procedures in person, we brought smaller groups back to live programming in the later half of 2020. Several learnings were documented and leadership assessed how to adjust to ensure our quality services were offered most effectively throughout the year.
