The Florence Project is a legal service organization providing free legal services to men, women, and unaccompanied children in immigration custody in Arizona. Although the government assists indigent criminal defendants and civil litigants through public defenders and legal aid attorneys, it does not provide attorneys for people in immigration removal proceedings. As a result, an estimated 86 percent of the detained people go unrepresented due to poverty. The Florence Project strives to address this inequity both locally and nationally through direct service, partnerships with the community, and advocacy and outreach efforts. (Less)

Thankfully, donations to our organization remained similar to 2019. We continued to sustain our work. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The past several years have been challenging ones for our work and the clients we serve. People in immigration detention, prison-like facilities, have been exposed in extremely high numbers to COVID. It is nearly impossible to socially distance in detention centers, and Arizona detention centers have had the most severe outbreaks over the course of the pandemic. This reality, along with the realities our young clients face in our communities after being released from immigration detention, has forced us to pivot many aspects of our legal and social services work. Despite these challenges, the Florence Project continues to serve children and adults who are fleeing violence, abuse, and persecution, as we have for over 30 years.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We continued to provide high-quality legal services to thousands of children and adults in immigration detention during COVID-19 and to families and youth at the border unable to apply for asylum or trapped in deadly conditions because of current border policies.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We will continue the use of a hotline for people in immigration detention to call us during the pandemic—a critical source of information and connection for people in immigration detention during the ongoing COVID outbreak. We also hired our first appellate attorney in support of our mission and will continue to grow our advocacy program. We were successful in assisting thousands of vulnerable individuals with requests to safely pursue asylum cases in the U.S. This included families with small children, indigenous language speakers, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and adults and children with serious medical conditions. Until the deplorable border closure ends, we will continue to advocate for families to pursue asylum in the U.S.

THIS INCLUDED A SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION OF OUR WORK INTO FEDERAL DISTRICT COURTS REPRESENTING INDIVIDUALS IN COVID-BASED HABEAS PETITIONS. THE PROJECT CONTINUED PROVIDING LEGAL SERVICES TO DETAINED IMMIGRANTS AMIDST THE CHALLENGES THAT COVID-19 CREATED SUCH AS ACCESSING INDIVIDUALS, CONTACTING INDIVIDUALS, AND PROVIDING ORIENTATION AND FOLLOW-UP SERVICES. THE PROJECT GAVE KNOW YOUR RIGHTS PRESENTATIONS TO 2,419 UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN AND PROVIDED CASE ASSISTANCE TO 3,672 ADULTS IN FEDERAL CUSTODY. THE PROJECT TOOK ON 563 NEW CLIENTS AND REPRESENTED HUNDREDS MORE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS; PLACED OVER 108 MATTERS WITH PRO BONO LAWYERS; PROVIDED SOCIAL SERVICES TO 529 PEOPLE; RESPONDED TO 80 FAMILY SEPARATION CASES; ASSISTED 78 KIDS UNDER 5-YEARS OLD. We collaborate with various law firms, news organizations, and religious groups. These interactions take multiple forms such as law firm partnerships, national media campaigns, and local aid. We partner with refugee aid groups to ensure that we are aware of the issues affecting our clients. We partner with national groups on large scale advocacy campaigns such as the Welcome with Dignity campaign which is comprised of organizations, activists, advocates, asylum seekers, and community members. Many of our attorneys present at national conferences hosted by the American Bar Association and other leading orgs. Our Pro Bono team created strong relationships with law firm partners. Partners represented our clients in many cases and sued the government on behalf of our clients. We have connected our clients with reporters across the country. Some of their stories have appeared in People, NBC, MSNBC, NPR, CNN, and the NY Times.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Though the pandemic has begun to wane in many U.S. communities, it remains an ongoing reality inside immigration detention centers, as vaccination programs have been slow to expand for incarcerated individuals. We continue to provide services remotely, though we have also begun to once again provide certain in-person services, particularly for released clients who are living with extensive trauma. We continue to confront the realities of quarantines, court closures, the challenges of developing trust in a virtual setting, and continued COVID outbreaks in detention facilities. Our teams do everything possible to provide people with the resources to understand their legal options and to ensure they have the support they need, including continued staffing of a telephone hotline since the start of the pandemic. This has been a vital source of connection and legal information for thousands of individuals in Arizona detention facilities. We remain grateful to the continued generosity of our supporters, especially during this time when our services are the lifeline to immigrants detained in unsafe conditions. We are constantly assessing our safe return to detention facilities (where outbreaks are ongoing, sadly) and back to the office in these post-COVID times. The pandemic presented unique challenges for our teams, however we are proud about how we were able to quickly and strategically alter our services and maintain social distancing and safety protocols.
