Mission
Our mission is to educate, save, and improve the lives of those suffering from mental health challenges and prior suicidal tendencies by providing highly trained service dogs as a vital lifeline. Through dedicated fundraising and partnerships with exceptional service dog training organizations, we aim to alleviate the burden on our partners, enabling them to focus on training exceptional dogs and selecting deserving individuals who meet our criteria. We are committed to donating training scholarships and service dogs because the dogs foster transformative partnerships that instill hope and resilience in those who have selflessly served our country and others in need. By uniting in our efforts, we believe that together we can save lives and create a brighter future for those who struggle with mental health challenges. For Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL), transforming lives is done through education and raising the necessary funds to sponsor deserving recipients with life-saving canine partners. Therefore, with education being a key component of the SDSL mission, in 2024, an educational collaboration was formed with Onondaga High School in Central New York to develop a curriculum for high school students. This curriculum will be piloted in local high schools in the Sarasota area during the 2025-2026 school year. The curriculum focuses on positive self-care practices while decreasing the stigma(opens in new window) associated with recognizing and promoting emotional well-being. By teaching youth how to develop lifelong positive self-care habits related to mental health issues, resilience is encouraged, and self-harming tendencies are decreased.
Vision
The profound impact of a service dog on a person’s life and those surrounding them is undeniable and is supported by powerful life-saving data. We also know in our hearts that when an individual in need receives a service dog, their physiological and psychological life is permanently and immeasurably changed. For these reasons, Service Dogs Saving Lives has become our life mission. Our lifesaving difference is focused on individuals who have exhibited mental health challenges, such as, self-harming tendencies, PTSD and previously contemplated suicide. As we expand, we plan to donate service dogs to individuals in need who exhibit these same tendencies. A service dog forms a unique partnership with its owner, providing hope to those with mental health challenges. A service dog with skills specific to the designated hero allows you to be a partner in positively changing lives, particularly those who have placed their own in the line of duty. Together, we can save lives.
Goals
- 1.Service Dogs Saving Lives has an ambitious goal of providing 5 to 10 service dogs each year to first responders and veterans with a prior history of self-harming tendencies. Since our inception, SDSL has funded 5 scholarships and service dogs for first responders and veterans. It is our goal to consistently fund 5 to 10 service dogs per year to deserving individuals.
- 2.Service Dogs Saving Lives plans to expand our presentations in high schools. The focus of these presentations is to share strategies and the importance of positive self-care practices, as well as the benefits of service dogs to those daily living with mental health challenges.
- 3.Service Dogs Saving Lives presents information to first responders in training on our mission and the value of caring for a colleague in the workplace. First responders are frequently exposed to repeated traumas; this exposure over time may lead to a dark place. Looking out for a colleague and recognizing signs of needed help are essential steps in maintaining one's health and that of a friend.
