Funders responded positively to our requests for financial support, and we received federal funding to purchase additional equipment needed to expand our services. We developed a limited fee-for-service program in partnership with COVID isolation and homeless shelters.

We pivoted our in-house meal services to curbside delivery. We suspended our nutrition education program until safe to reopen. Prior to the onset of the pandemic, we anticipated serving 100,000 meals in 2020. However, we provided 1,067,520 meals in 2020 exceeded this amount in 2021.

Our organization has a robust marketing strategy to raise awareness of our service and the need for our services. Members of our leadership team seek and accept opportunities for presenting at meetings of local organizations. Our executive director participated in a food security group and made a presentation to our county commissioners, which was made available to local media.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
When COVID-19 began in early 2020, WCFR immediately adapted our approach responding to the new reality. We closed our in-house restaurant and education services to focus solely on curbside meal distribution to meet nutrition needs and respond to the skyrocketing increase in demand for our services. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we now conduct tented parking-lot distribution of prepared meals and grocery boxes. The only requirement to receive this food is that an adult woman be present. We also reach food-insecure women, teens, and children through our adapted Nutrition-To-Go program, which has 21 community partners that reach people experiencing housing instability and homelessness, family violence, economic insecurity, and other challenges. Collaboration is the heartbeat of this program. We collaborate with organizations that are highly trusted by women and children in need and where a nutritious meal will make a difference in their lives. Our partners’ only responsibilities are to serve the meals on the schedule they arrange with us, and report back to us so we may, in turn, report the impact to our donors and funders. The power of our partnership is that it enhances the services of our partners for the improved well-being of their clients. One of our original partners, Vanessa Behan reports, “We have seen great results from our parents who are thrilled to have several stresses alleviated in one meal.” As the pandemic evolves, we will shift our distribution model to respond to changing needs. When it is safe to do so, we plan to resume dining-in services but are prepared to continue meeting increased demand through parking-lot pick-up and partner delivery for as long as needed.
