Donors have expressed extreme concern about the use of their personal information by charities and the desire to have this information kept confidential. The exchanging and sale of lists for telemarketing and the mass distribution of "junk mail," among other things, can be minimized if the charity assures the privacy of its donors. Privacy policies are assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Yes: This charity has a written donor privacy policy published on its website, which states unambiguously that (1) it will not share or sell a donor's personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations or (2) it will only share or sell personal information once the donor has given the charity specific permission to do so.

  • Opt-out: The charity has a written privacy policy published on its website which enables donors to tell the charity to remove their names and contact information from lists the charity shares or sells. How COVID-19 impacted the organization's operations financially:

With the absence of our largest fundraiser event and the closure of our thrift stores, we were buoyed by securing a PPP loan that helps us stay afloat and to keep people employed.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

We had to temporarily closed down our thrift stores that we use to help fundraise for our programs. This also meant people weren't not able to use our pet food banks located at our stores. We also had to cancel our two biggest fundraisers that help support of programs. As an animal shelter, we halted volunteer opportunities and did adoptions by appointment.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

We provided staff with COVID gear such as masks, sanitizers, social distancing protocols, and cleaning supplies. As for adoptions, we were able to vet potential adopters more thoroughly to make certain animals went to the right household.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Asking visitors to our locations to sanitize their hands and to social distance. Though not implemented yet, we saw the need for mobile pet food banks that I would like to start this year.

Strategic Goals

Goal One: We recently increased the values of our coupon assistance programs for low-income households, along with another program to reduce unwanted cat population through spaying of females.

Describe an investment in leadership

The executive director consistently seeks out online learning opportunities to enhance diversity, development strategies, animal welfare policies, and belongs to several nonprofit groups that share information for the collective benefit. Education is part of our overall budget for all management staff. Many of these opportunities can be accessed remotely where our shelter manager will learn of new animal sheltering policies and enrichment activities. The executive director also made a significant time and cost commitment and they recently received their MBA to help guide the organization.

What are this organization’s external mobilizaton efforts?

Working with local print media, we do numerous outreach opportunities promoting responsible pet ownership. We also work with other nonprofits to protect animals involved in domestic violence incidents. WAIF is a member of the Washington State Federation of Animal Care and Control agencies and we are part of that coalition when we report our outcomes on the national database "Shelter Animals Count." As a private animal welfare organization, we have two municipal animal control contracts where we work with the respective animal control officers to educate the public with responsible pet ownership and licensing.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


The biggest impact was the cancellation of our fundraising events but we were able to pivot and capitalize by acknowledging the challenges through a direct mail piece and a few outreach events. We also reached to longtime and valued donors who created a match campaign where every donated dollar would be triple-matched. Most of our storytelling was through Facebook and that helped keep the community engaged with our animals. We were compelled to follow the adoption by appointment model, which allowed for permanent adoptions with lower than average return rate. Our thrift stores made for a greater challenge by temporarily closing the middle of March 2020 to July 2020. The PPP loan helped tremendously in keeping people employed and we did have to update cleaning protocols with the public's safety in mind when we did reopen.
