FamilyWorks is a core member of the Seattle Food Committee, a network comprised of 27 food Seattle-based organizations serving those in need of supplemental food. Together, these organizations work to address challenges that impact their work by sharing community resources, conducting advocacy, and sharing best practices. Our Food Bank manager chairs the Nutritious Food Sourcing, and our Executive Director chairs the Advocacy team.
FamilyWorks is deeply involved in Hunger Action Month. During the month of September, FamilyWorks highlights the impact that hunger has for families and children in Seattle and identifies concrete ways in which people can get involved and take a stand against hunger through meaningful action with our organization.
FamilyWorks is active in the Seattle Human Services Coalition, a multi-racial, multi-cultural group of human service providers and concerned community members committed to helping Seattle and King County Residents meet their basic human needs.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
FamilyWorks adapted all programs and services so that families could be served with safety and dignity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To do this, we sought feedback from our participants to inform adjustments to our programs. We conducted interviews with food bank visitors and asked them what would be helpful in making our services more accessible.
Based on their feedback, we evaluated our technology needs. Through partnerships with tech sector volunteers, we have developed a text-based ordering platform that allows participants with access to SMS to schedule food pickups and customize food bank orders. Those who want to participate will simply text the word “FOOD” to an advertised phone number. From there, participants receive texts taking them step-by- step through the ordering process – including a date and time to pick up groceries from the food bank. This allows food bank staff to better anticipate customer needs, inventory, and to serve clients in a weeklong format (less dependent on fixed hours).
Since its launch, Text to Go has been highly utilized and positively received. Between February and September of 2021, FamilyWorks has served over 60 households through the Text to Go program, totaling over 400 visits. Participants enjoy this adaptive service and appreciate the convenience of securely picking up nutritious food in their own time without having to wait in line. We are excited to expand upon the language capabilities of this program in the near future, allowing clients of all cultures and backgrounds to communicate effectively with our staff and volunteers.
