Creating a healthier environment serves all Oregonians and as a statewide organization we are not embedded in a single community or culture. However, we focus most of our resources to prioritize benefits for low-income residents and people of color in frontline communities (both rural and urban). This commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion began more than a decade ago and seeks to: 1) embed principles of equity and inclusion into our practices and organizational policies and culture; 2) promote diversity and inclusion in our workplace and in the environmental community (e.g., we hosted a workshop for environmental NGOs to expose how the anti-immigration movement was greenwashing our messaging), and 3) build coalitions with community partners from across the state as a tool

We worked with Climate Solutions and OLCV to create a coalition focused on the Oregon Climate Action Plan, emphasizing shared power with BIPOC organizations, which serve as co-leads of key coalition strategy tables and are engaged in one or more state-level processes. With Forth, Verde and Climate Solutions, we co-founded the Clean and Just Transportation coalition to advance EVs and more equitable transportation funding systems. OEC led a broad coalition of public health, disability rights organizations, physicians and green chemistry businesses, that resulted in the Toxic-Free Kids Act (TFKA) and we are now working with Hacienda CDC to identify and address the toxic chemicals of greatest concern to residents of low-income affordable housing. OEC co-founded the Oregon Water Futures Project with the Coalition of Communities of Color, Willamette Partnership and the University of Oregon Latin and Indigenous Studies Program and has since engaged other social justice partners.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Like many NGOs, when COVID hit, OEC quickly shifted to working remotely, using Zoom, Slack and other tools to remain as connected as possible. Externally, all of the public policy processes we normally engage in -- legislative hearings, state agency rule makings, etc. - also moved online. While not as optimal as in-person participation, we learned that these online processes can actually facilitate greater engagement, particularly for people who live in rural areas and for those who might find in-person participation too intimidating. We recognize that we were fortunate in being in a position to make these transitions and greatly appreciate the efforts of first responders and other essential workers who could not.
