The Volunteers In Medicine Clinic is a community-based organization dedicated to meeting the primary health needs of the underserved in the greater Eugene and Springfield metropolitan area. The essence of this philosophy is to optimize the healing environment and improve outcomes for the medically underserved in our community. The structure and process of the clinic is based on people's needs, viewed from a holistic perspective, recognizing the dignity of each individual. We aim to give voice to the population we serve. The clinic has close working relationships with other agencies and institutions, and assists clients in affiliating with other care providers. We emphasize health education and prevention. (Less)

We maintain a website and social media presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Staff and board members participate in community activities by sitting on committees such as the Community Vaccination Collaborative, the Black & African Community Outreach, the NAFC Advisory Council, the Health Committee of the NAACP, the Poverty and Homelessness Board Health Action Team sponsored by the County, and the like. Board and staff also serve as board members for other local nonprofit organizations. We work with other local health-care providers, Community Care Organizations and local hospitals and governmental agencies to collaborate on heath care delivery to our eligible population.

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
The Covid-19 epidemic and ensuing shut-downs, protocols and patient concerns demanded that VIM Clinic take measures to protect patients, staff and volunteers. Over the past year we have increased our in-person patient visits and have seen growth in the numbers of patients returning to the clinic. Although some volunteers left the organization, we have actively recruited new volunteers. Over 45% of our patients are Spanish-speaking, and bi-lingual volunteers continue to work in the Front Office contacting patients via phone and virtual applications. Medical interpreters were available during every shift. We also employed a bilingual Community Health Worker/Interpreter Coordinator to both increase our outreach in the Latinx community and recruit/train volunteer interpreters. Our Behavioral Health team has maintained services, and are now seeing patients face-to-face. Our designated Behavioral Health counselor is bi-cultural and bi-lingual. We are continuing to offer telehealth services as well as in-clinic patient visits. Demographic data indicated that diabetes and hypertension diagnoses are still very frequent amongst our patient population. In addition to the diabetes and hypertension care already provided by the Clinic, the Clinic implemented a new program to provide blood pressure cuffs for patients to take home and monitor their blood pressure, reporting the results to Clinic. The Clinic is also implementing the use of equipment to test and monitor A1C levels to provide preventative care for patients who are pre-diabetic.
