The pandemic brought a lot of media attention to the increase and awareness of domestic violence. Many people were calling about wanting to volunteer. Budgeting for certain programs had to be rearranged and resource spending was very tight-knit. However, there were many temporary grants for COVID relief.
How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:
The pandemic caused a national surge in domestic violence rates, especially during the shelter-in-place. This created a barrier to survivors trying to access our services or programs as our main form of communication had previously always been a 24/7 crisis line number.
How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:
We had to offer telehealth and virtual support groups for our counseling clients. We had to transition our food pantry to the outdoors using the parking lot to best keep our clients and staff safe and healthy. We had to temporarily lower intake capacity for shelters to maintain social distancing.
Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:
We will continue to offer telehealth on an as-needed basis. While many of our groceries are still prepackaged. we now offer a client choice model that wasn't accessible with our previous food pantry location. Our volunteer training continues to be held online as we can reach more out of area organizations.

The pandemic presented a number of challenges to our programs, especially to counseling and our food pantry distributions. We began to offer online support groups and telehealth for our counseling clients. For over a year we had to convert our food pantry to operate outdoors and prepackage groceries to uphold staff and client safety. Most if not all of our meetings were converted to Zoom including our volunteer training.
