    Canine Companions for Independence

    Mission

Canine Companions is a national nonprofit that provides expertly trained service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities. Founded in 1975, Canine Companions created the concept of a service dog to assist a person with a disability with physical tasks. Headquartered in Santa Rosa, California, with six state-of-the-art training centers across the country, Canine Companions is the largest provider of service dogs in the United States. Canine Companions service dogs pick up dropped items, turn on and off lights, open and close doors and drawers and more for people with physical disabilities, alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing to important sounds in their environment, and even help mitigate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for veterans. All Canine Companions service dogs and ongoing follow up services are provided at no cost to clients.
