Second Harvest invests in our leadership through the collaborative planning of our Senior Leadership Team and through conference attendance and webinars held by Feeding America and the California Association of Food Banks. These forums allow our leaders to share best practices, gain new ideas and share their accomplishments. These conferences are targeted by functional area and allow for great collaboration. Staff also participate in local community workshops and trainings focused on trauma-informed services, food safety, racial equity and more. Employees also have access to LinkedIn Learning in order to hone specific skills and areas in which they want to grow.

Second Harvest works with nearly 400 partners to distribute food, including faith-based organizations, schools, senior centers, community groups, soup kitchens, rehabilitation centers and shelters. We lead the Outreach Partner Engagement Network (OPEN), a network of dedicated partners who are committed to providing streamlined outreach services and easy-to-navigate referrals in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. We are active members of the California Association of Food Banks (CAFB), Bay Area Food Banks, and Feeding America. We educate, inspire and engage our community through marketing activities including our website, social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, LinkedIn), digital advertising and press releases. We work with local, state, and national organizations to advocate for legislation and policy improvements that strengthen the impact of food assistance programs and create systemic change to address the root causes of hunger.
The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.
Fiscal Year 2022-2023 brought significant challenges for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. As we all faced an uncertain economy and record inflation, the elimination of emergency CalFresh benefits in March 2023 dealt another blow to low-income households already struggling to make ends meet. Families and seniors on fixed incomes turned to Second Harvest for food assistance, and we immediately saw a spike in need. We began serving half a million people every month starting in February 2023 — numbers we hadn't seen since the height of the pandemic. The same pressures impacting our clients also strained our budget. While our costs and the number of neighbors seeking our help increased, financial donations decreased significantly. Despite the hurdles, the innovative spirit and resilience of our staff, volunteers, partners and community members enabled us to keep up with the need. At Second Harvest, we made difficult choices to better balance our budget while still providing a nutritious mix of food to clients and partners. We grew community volunteer support and increased the already substantial amount of quality food we rescue and provide to clients. This incredible community stepped up to help us overcome challenges and show up for our neighbors.
