While Abode Services is in full support of the rental moratorium (SB-91), the agency incurred an approximate loss of $750,000 from April to June 2021.


How COVID-19 impacted the organization's delivery of programs:

Abode has been working diligently to provide an expanded level of shelter (including the provision of separate spaces for individuals with mild respiratory symptoms) in a comprehensive effort to minimize the number of people living unsheltered in homeless encampments. Abode must continue to act quickly in order to move individuals, children, and families into affordable shelters and homes, where they can more easily keep themselves and their neighbors healthy. Many of Abode's clients do not have the luxury of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave. Abode is working to provide basic needs to provide food and medical assistance - in addition to critical shelter and housing.


How this organization adapted to changing conditions caused by COVID-19:

Abode Services enacted a new “remote” and “partial remote” work policy, complete with carefully developed HR infrastructure, accountability, and evolving technology. The permanent policy update was enacted in July to keep staff and the community-at-large as safe as possible and ultimately, to slow and limit the potential spread of the virus. Administrative staff quickly and successfully transitioned to an online and virtual work platform to keep up with Abode’s model for consistent collaboration and communication. Zoom has become a staple for the organization. Due to the nature of Abode’s work and mission, at least 60 percent of Abode’s staff must continue to conduct their work in-person. In-person positions are essential and work with compassion and dedication on the “frontlines” to serve the most vulnerable. In-person positions include: property managers, outreach workers, harm reduction specialists, shelter monitors, housing navigators, intake specialists, and more.


Innovations the organization intends to continue permanently after the pandemic:

Abode Services will continue to offer a partially remote work platform for full-time staff.

Abode Services upholds Performance Standards (Supervision and Training Standards). Abode has made a considerable investment in the ongoing training and education its employees. The agency's services staff receives regular trainings on key elements of its philosophies and approach, including Housing First, harm reduction, cultural competency, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and other important topics. The agency offers “Abode University,” an online training forum offering short instructional videos which employees can view and managers can assign at any time, which cover various administrative and programmatic topics. Abode University trainings cover a variety of topics, from how to develop an individualized service plan to the HUD definition of chronic homelessness, and many topics in between.

Story of Adaptability

The nonprofit has an opportunity to tell the story of how the organization adapted to tremendous external changes in the last year.


To address COVID-19, Abode successfully hired and onboarded a full-time Procurement Specialist. The Procurement Specialist was tasked with identifying, purchasing, and organizing the safe distribution of essential PPE for staff and participants working and living in the five San Francisco Bay Area counties served. As a result of the hire, Abode has been able to create a streamlined, safe, cost-effective and highly effective system for managing and following the strict safety guidelines set forth by the CDC. Likewise, the Procurement Specialist was responsible for tracking the latest updates and revisions made by the CDC while keeping a “finger on the pulse” of infection rate trends in the Counties served by Abode. With support from the California Healthcare Foundation, the hire was made in a top-to-bottom effort to keep Abode staff, participants, and the community at-large as safe as possible through the pandemic.
