Mission

The Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) is a nationally-recognized family resource center in San Francisco. With over 35 years of experience, HPP provides transformative, evidence-informed support for homeless and low-income families, with an emphasis on health and stability through the early years. Founded in 1989, HPP first launched in the closet of a homeless shelter to help provide prenatal care to women who otherwise would not receive it. Over three-and-a-half decades, HPP’s focus has shifted from that of an agency devoted exclusively to the provision of prenatal care, to that of a family resource center with a broader mission: in partnership with our families, break the cycle of childhood poverty. With perinatal support still at the core of its work, HPP addresses the social determinants of health, supporting both parents and children in order to strengthen the whole family. HPP offers a range of services from emergency support to intensive case management and partners with parents during the critical stages from pregnancy through kindergarten. The first agency in San Francisco to hire former clients as staff, HPP’s evolution has been guided by the community it serves. More than half of HPP’s immensely talented staff of 125+ have lived experience and/or are graduates of the agency’s 16-month, federally-accredited Community Health Worker Apprenticeship Program, which trains former clients and community members for careers in the nonprofit sector. For over 35 years, HPP has demonstrated impressive outcomes with life-changing results. Year over year, ~95% of families remain stably housed; 90% of babies are born on time and at healthy weights; and 90% of job training graduates find jobs within 30 days of graduation.
